Valor Mortis priced at $40 for competitive autumn game season

Valor Mortis, the forthcoming first-person Soulslike by One More Level, will be offered at a notably reduced launch price, even though it features an extensive 20-hour campaign and arrives during a period crowded with major new releases.

New Pricing Strategy for Anticipated Soulslike Announced by Developer

Launching at $40 / €40 for its standard edition, Valor Mortis will undercut many AAA titles set at higher price points this fall. The price point for the UK has not been revealed yet. In a statement shared on X, the development team outlined the thought process behind this move, citing both faith in their product and an awareness of gamers’ financial and scheduling constraints amid one of the busiest gaming seasons in recent memory.

The developers shared, “Over the last year, we have deliberated on what Valor Mortis should cost. Its 20-hour narrative easily rivals that of many full-price games in terms of quality and fidelity,” but noted that the fall season is packed with new titles and players have limited resources and attention to allocate.

Competition and Player Trust Shape Pricing, Says Publisher

Valor Mortis will become available on 13th October, coinciding with launches like Gears of War: E-Day, Ace Combat 8, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Final Fantasy Resonance, and Phantom Blade Zero within the same month. Notably, late September marks the release of Marvel’s Wolverine, Silent Hill: Townfall, and Control Resonant. Due to a date change for Control Resonant, Valor Mortis shifted its release from 24th September to 13th October.

Developer One More Level, acclaimed for Ghostrunner, has also committed to delivering ongoing free post-release updates during the initial weeks and months following launch.

Details on Deluxe Edition and Post-Launch Content

For those seeking additional content, the Deluxe Edition is available at $60 / €60. This premium edition includes the base game, a major narrative DLC planned for 2027, and a pack of weapon skins. The development team continues to reiterate their focus on adding value after release with several upcoming free updates.

Blake Rochkind, head of Lyrical Games (the publisher for Valor Mortis), explained that setting a lower retail price was a carefully considered move. In his interview with The Game Business, Rochkind acknowledged concerns about perceptions but emphasized the intention behind the decision. “My biggest concern was that it would send the wrong message about the game,” he remarked. “So we wanted to make sure that we send the right message to the consumer about why this is, and hopefully help them understand that this is a decision we’re making out of confidence for the game.”

He further pointed out that, as one of the few all-new intellectual properties launching amid industry juggernauts this fall, Valor Mortis occupies a unique position. “The cards we’ve been dealt is [that] we are one of the only new IPs launching this fall,” he mentioned. “We are pretty confident in Valor Mortis. It is a great game. I’m very, very excited for people to play it. But ultimately, I think the worst thing we could do is not push our chips in and say, ‘We want this to be a game that you can pick up alongside these other great games.’”

Release Platforms and Purchase Options

On 13th October, Valor Mortis will be available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. In addition to being offered both physically and digitally, the title will be included on Game Pass for PC and Xbox on day one of release.

This pricing tactic reflects a broader trend in which developers search for ways to make their original IPs more appealing amid the influx of high-profile launches; Valor Mortis seeks to distinguish itself by combining affordability with a rich gameplay experience for players.
