Urban Outfitters sees growth in dorm decor sales

According to industry data, 2024 back-to-college shoppers are on track to spend more than in any previous year, with home furnishings for dorms and apartments accounting for a large portion of this anticipated spending increase. The National Retail Federation predicts that total back-to-college outlays will surpass $100 billion for the first time in 2024, marking a milestone that underscores the expanding demand for home goods within the college shopping sector.

Within this unprecedented total, about $14 billion, or roughly $194 per shopper, is expected to be allocated just for dorm and apartment furnishings. As a consequence, this segment represents the second-largest category after electronics, reflecting a notable shift in what students and parents consider essential for life on campus. Additionally, ad platform MNTN found that advertisers selling dorm supplies experienced an average year-over-year revenue boost of 73.65% during July, the busiest month for back-to-college shopping.

Urban Outfitters Adapts to Soaring Demand for College Home Goods

To capitalize on this trend, Urban Outfitters has put a renewed emphasis on its home furnishing selections. Karen Booker, who heads merchandising for non-apparel items at the company, shared insights about evolving college retail preferences and Urban Outfitters’ approach in a conversation on the Modern Retail Podcast.

This year, Urban Outfitters has made bedding a major focal point, Booker revealed. She described bedding as “the hero of their personal space, particularly in these new dorm areas, which are pretty small,” recognizing its importance in crafting a cozy, individualized living area for college students. Building on customer feedback from the prior year, the brand rolled out bedding that features extra-soft fabrics and a broader selection of prints and colors to maximize comfort and personalization.

Booker further mentioned that many students prioritize both comfort and a sense of nostalgia, seeking dorm bedding that creates a welcoming, home-like retreat. This echoes a wider trend of students using decor to express themselves and ease the transition to college life.

Balancing Affordability, Design, and Gen Z Tastes

Booker highlighted how this year’s product range was developed to fuse affordable prices with visual appeal. Gen Z consumers, she explained, tend to gravitate toward expressive, on-trend designs but are equally mindful of staying within their budgets. Urban Outfitters’ assortment has emphasized retro themes and floral patterns to mirror what’s trending in the college market.

She also pointed out a shift toward photography-themed merchandise, including photo gear and decorative frames, offering budget-friendly ways for students to showcase their personalities. Besides, practical accessories such as jewelry and beauty organizers have been thoughtfully designed to double as attractive decorative pieces for student spaces.

“The Gen Z consumer is really smart and very stylish and very creative. So it is a challenge, but also a delight, to be able to try and figure out what we can do to serve that at an accessible price but also [ensure] great quality,” Booker explained, speaking to the challenge and opportunity of serving an informed, creative audience.

Staying Current: Community Engagement and Trendspotting

Brands hoping to appeal to younger shoppers need to keep pace with rapidly evolving tastes. According to Booker, Urban Outfitters maintains its edge by drawing on feedback from over 27,000 brand ambassadors through the Urban Outfitters Insiders program. This community network, combined with input gathered from customer reviews and online spaces such as Reddit, informs the company’s strategy and buying decisions.

One standout trend this year has been the emergence of “bed party” social posts, where students use elaborate bedding setups to reveal their college choices. To participate in this trend, Urban Outfitters broadened its offerings to include more throw pillows, accent pieces, and officially licensed college merchandise.

Booker emphasized that the response from students, parents, and other customers was overwhelmingly positive, demonstrating energy around these trends and the need to stay nimble to serve Gen Z’s rapidly changing expectations.

This increased emphasis on home decor throughout the back-to-school season highlights not only a shift in the way students shop, but also how brands like Urban Outfitters are adapting to meet the needs and tastes of Gen Z shoppers. As the value and impact of this sector continue to grow, engaging with customers and monitoring emerging trends will be essential.
