Target launches AI photo search and product review tools

With an eye on streamlining and enhancing the customer journey, Target has upgraded its artificial intelligence shopping platform, bringing forward new features that create a more personalized and seamless shopping process. These latest AI initiatives aim to bridge the online and in-store experiences, offering innovations in how customers find and choose products.

Advancements in AI for Shopping Experience

Target’s strategic investment in AI-powered capabilities recently led to the debut of several digital features to assist shoppers. According to a press release on Tuesday, the brand’s mobile app gained an AI-enabled Photo Search feature in August. This feature lets shoppers either take or upload a photo and immediately browse for similar products in Target’s inventory, helping visually-oriented buyers locate products without needing specific details like names or models.

Earlier, in June, Target enhanced product selection with the Review Insights tool. This AI-powered function distills customer reviews into concise highlights, making it easier for shoppers to evaluate potential purchases based on summarized feedback. Target has observed higher conversion rates and more items being placed in shopping carts since introducing this tool, suggesting that customers appreciate having access to essential review highlights.

Target has also updated its app with the Buy Again option, recommending items users have purchased in the past or tend to buy frequently. This, together with personalized deal alerts, has resulted in notable year-over-year improvement in repeat purchases for the retailer.

Seamless Multichannel Shopping

To enhance the shopping journey across both digital and in-store channels, Target rolled out the Continue Shopping feature during the previous fall. This tool gives users quick access to the products they last viewed, enabling a smooth transition and continuous shopping experience whether they’re online or in a physical store.

Sarah Travis, the company’s executive vice president and chief digital and revenue officer, stated that these efforts leverage the fluid relationship customers have with digital and in-person shopping. Travis highlighted Target’s ongoing focus on “using AI and personalization in purposeful ways to help [guests] find what they need faster, discover new possibilities and shop with confidence.”

During the 2024 back-to-school season, the retailer accelerated its digital strategy by applying AI for large-scale personalization pilots, enhancing how it recommends products or structures wish lists. Brad Thompson, Senior Vice President of Technology, commented this month that Target’s use of AI is making tailored shopping available to more customers, especially at significant shopping periods.

Financial Results Bolstered by AI

These AI-driven enhancements came on the heels of a strong second-quarter showing for Target. The company reported a 5.3% increase in year-over-year net sales, totaling $26.5 billion. Comparable sales climbed 3.8%, while net earnings soared 100% year over year to reach almost $1.9 billion. Reflecting this performance, Target raised its net sales growth guidance for the year to about 5%, up from its earlier 4% projection.

Among Target’s technology introductions in 2024 are the Bullseye Gift Finder, a generative AI tool that assists in picking out gifts by considering the recipient’s interests, age, and hobbies. The retailer also developed the Target Trend Brain system, enabling third-party marketplace sellers to better detect and respond to new retail trends as they emerge.

Staying Ahead with Digital Innovation

In an environment where artificial intelligence reshapes big-box retail, Target stands out by using tech advancements to deepen customer engagement. AI features such as smarter product searches, industry trend detection, custom recommendations, and review summaries are redefining both customer and seller experiences with the brand.

As Target continues reporting strong growth year after year and broadens its digital lineup, the company’s commitment to artificial intelligence is poised to further modernize the shopping journey—delivering shoppers more individualized, efficient experiences in stores and online alike.
