Cloud Imperium Games has announced that the launch of Squadron 42, the eagerly awaited single-player campaign branching off from Star Citizen, has been delayed to the second quarter of 2027. This decision stems from a strategic move to prevent the game’s debut from coinciding with GTA 6’s highly anticipated release.
Industry Response and Revised Launch Schedule
The original target for Squadron 42 had been set for 2026, a timeline that Cloud Imperium Games continued to support up until late last year. In a recent blog post, Chris Roberts, the founder and CEO, detailed the rationale behind the latest postponement. He noted that releasing in autumn 2026—especially with the “spiritual successor to Wing Commander” that has seen over twelve years of development—would see attention diverted to GTA 6 from Rockstar Games. Roberts further argued that it would be unfair to the dedicated work invested over the past decade if the release were muted by competing headlines and media focus on GTA 6’s debut.
Roberts pointed out that their internal schedule aimed for a Q4 release coinciding with IAE, the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo—a significant in-universe event for Star Citizen. Even though GTA 6 will not appear on PC this November, its arrival on consoles is still expected to dominate media coverage and influence content creators, making it hard for other games to break through. Since 2014, the development of Squadron 42 has been in full swing, following an initial year allocated to founding new studios and laying out Star Citizen’s early infrastructure.
Exclusive Previews and Cast Highlights
This October, a select group of early backers and content creators will be invited to preview the game. After these hands-on sessions, Cloud Imperium Games plans to announce a more precise launch date. As it stands, the Q2 2027 target hints at a potential spring release, barring further delays.
Having spent more than ten years in development and facing repeated postponements, Squadron 42 boasts a prominent cast, including celebrated names like Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Strong.
Funding Achievements and Game Development
May marked a milestone for Star Citizen, the expansive multiplayer universe linked to Squadron 42, as it exceeded $1 billion in crowdfunding. This accomplishment secures its position as one of the most sizable and high-budget crowdfunded games to date.
Coinciding with this achievement, Cloud Imperium Games revealed a major new pledge item—the Anvil Odin capital ship, priced at $5,000 (£3,700). Offered only as a “limited vehicle concept pledge” with no fixed delivery timeframe, purchasers were granted temporary use of an Idris P vessel as a stand-in while awaiting the Odin’s future launch.
With significant milestones and high-profile actors in place, excitement surrounding Squadron 42 and Star Citizen remains strong. The coming months should bring additional details through planned previews and a finalized release roadmap.
