Pentagon consults Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey on military strategy

The U.S. Department of Defense has announced Project Meridian, a new venture that brings together prominent figures in tech and policy, including Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, to help determine how warfare will develop amidst quickly advancing technologies.

High-Tech Transformation at the Pentagon

During his “State of the Force” address on Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth introduced Project Meridian. The initiative will investigate the evolving role of technology on the battlefield and aims to pinpoint the strategies, weaponry, and tools that will influence future military engagements.

Hegseth selected Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey (Anduril’s founder), and Newt Gingrich (former House Speaker) to co-lead the initiative. The core team will collaborate with respected policy and academic leaders, all under the oversight of the Defense Department’s Chief Technology Officer, Emil Michael. As described in a public letter, Hegseth outlined the team’s responsibility to analyze the “battlefields of the future” and consider which “weapons and technologies warfighters may use on them.”

The team has a mandate to deliver its findings and practical recommendations for the development, testing, and fielding of advanced military technologies within 120 days, ensuring that the United States continues to lead in military innovation.

Pentagon Announces Autonomous Warfare Command

On the same day, Hegseth also revealed the establishment of an Autonomous Warfare Command, a new group focusing on scaling up the military’s deployment of AI systems and unmanned drones. This underscores the Pentagon’s intent to fast-track autonomous and AI-driven capabilities into its operations.

A notable aspect of the Project Meridian rollout is the choice to keep details about the partner organization overseeing the study confidential. Neither the organization’s name nor its leadership has been made public. When pressed for more information, officials provided a link to a press release and emphasized that details extend only as far as Secretary Hegseth’s official remarks.

Return of Musk and Luckey to Defense Policy

This project represents Elon Musk’s first formal involvement with the current administration since his resignation from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last year. Musk continues to play a vital role in U.S. defense programs through SpaceX, from handling satellite launches to operating a crucial communications network for the military. Musk also recently joined other leading figures at a White House lunch with the president to address the trajectory of AI technology.

Meanwhile, Anduril, Palmer Luckey’s defense company, supplies the government with advanced autonomous systems, drones, and weaponry. The company was recently awarded agreements to provide long-range missile systems, semi-autonomous fighter jets, and mobile intelligence hardware to the Army.

Many observers point out that recommendations emerging from Project Meridian may favor technologies already developed by Musk and Luckey’s companies. The Trump administration, which has consistently named state-of-the-art defense solutions as a central priority, often invites Silicon Valley collaborators for research and technology acquisition efforts.

Project Meridian’s Timeline and Expected Impact

Over the next four months, Project Meridian’s experts will review a range of next-generation technologies poised to redefine the battlefield. The finalized recommendations will help shape the Department of Defense’s efforts in areas such as advanced drones, weapons, and artificial intelligence. However, the organizing partner’s identity and oversight structure for the project are still undisclosed.

The Defense Department awaits Project Meridian’s final report, which is anticipated to strongly influence future policies as threats evolve and new military technologies take center stage in global conflict.
