Peak XV raises Surge seed funding limit to $5M and adds 18 startups

Peak XV Partners is now investing as much as $5 million in startups enrolled in its Surge accelerator, setting a new benchmark for early-stage funding in India and Southeast Asia as it unveils its newest class of 18 startups.

For its current Surge group, Surge 12, Peak XV Partners has increased the single-company investment limit, bringing the total commitment to more than $50 million—up from the previous $3 million per startup. This cohort has collectively raised more than $90 million in seed capital, according to Peak XV, and features a more diverse international pool of founders than ever before.

Larger Checks in Competitive Times

Early-stage companies are finding it more challenging to advance to subsequent fundraising rounds, prompting Peak XV to raise its funding cap. “The bar to raise a Series A has gone up pretty significantly,” said Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV. He indicated that larger seed rounds—especially for deeptech firms that typically require more capital—are becoming a necessity.

This cohort also includes startups that had previously sourced capital from external parties, and in several cases, even from Peak XV prior to joining Surge. While Peak XV hasn’t disclosed the updated median check size, they have confirmed that it has risen alongside the new investment maximum.

By increasing the amount of seed funding available, Peak XV aims to give startups a longer runway, helping them develop products, launch in new markets, and scale—ultimately making it easier to meet the tougher requirements for follow-on funding.

Surge Grows Global, Even If Roots Are Local

Anandan highlighted the increasingly global nature of Surge’s cohorts. Out of the 18 startups in Surge 12, five are squarely focused on India, yet a majority of founders still reside in the country. Meanwhile, 12 of the companies are building solutions for international markets, underscoring the global aspirations of founders whose teams span the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Surge now boasts a community of over 180 startups led by founders from upwards of 18 countries. The leading 10 alumni from this program are now generating a combined annual revenue of over $1 billion, according to Peak XV.

Ever since Surge launched in 2019 (at that time called Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia), its priority has been to support experienced entrepreneurs, operators, and technical experts. Anandan noted that between 50% and 60% of each group’s participants have backgrounds with established technology companies, bringing strong operational knowledge to their new startups.

Diversity of Sectors in Surge 12

This year’s Surge features 18 startups working across a range of industries, from AI and robotics to consumer tech, healthcare, fintech, space, and creative tools. Examples include:

  • Alma: Focused on making personal computers faster and more accessible regarding cost.
  • August AI: Delivers AI-driven healthcare solutions with physician involvement, serving more than 9 million users in 160+ countries.
  • Ditto: Specializes in AI-powered matchmaking for college students, already securing $9.2 million with Peak XV leading the investment.
  • GameStock: Introduces gamified competition elements to financial markets, making trading more engaging.
  • ULOOK: Develops autonomous satellites for RF-based sensing; its team has been part of over 12 satellite missions and accumulated about $2.3 million in funding before Surge.

Other companies are building around AI for talent sourcing (Kello), tools for content creation (Kindling), browser-based music collaboration (Riffle), underground pipe inspection robots (Puralink), enterprise AI safety (Reinforce Labs), and streamlining commercial insurance processes (Rosella), which recently completed a $2.5 million pre-seed round.

Three additional startups working on education, advanced AI, and healthcare products have yet to officially announce their products or names, according to Peak XV.

Peak XV’s Broader Investment Approach

Beyond the Surge accelerator, Peak XV also invests directly at the seed stage, often supporting these startups in follow-on rounds as well. This strategy aligns Peak XV with founders and repeat entrepreneurs, serving as a trusted long-term partner from inception through growth.

With over $10 billion in assets under management, Peak XV Partners continues to stand out as one of the largest and most influential venture capital firms in the region, now making larger initial investments in promising startups across India, Southeast Asia, and globally.
