Ocarina of Time remake gameplay revealed at Nintendo Direct

To mark the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, Nintendo has announced that an exclusive remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 this November 5. Revealed during a dedicated Nintendo Direct, the first gameplay trailer demonstrates a careful blend of upgraded visuals with the spirit of the beloved classic that fans remember.

Classic Style Enhanced With Modern Design Choices

Narration from franchise producer Eiji Aonuma accompanied the footage, where it was demonstrated that the remake continues the iconic third-person adventure experience, but now utilizes a new game engine to provide advanced visuals and more seamless gameplay. One major gameplay update is the option for players to jump manually, giving greater agency during Link’s exploration of Hyrule.

While the look and sound of the game remain rooted in the 1998 release, many of the familiar animations and audio cues are faithfully transferred or thoughtfully remade. Longtime fans will recognize the celebrated treasure chest opening animation, which benefits from enhanced, hardware-driven graphics without changing the sequence itself.

New Abilities, Improvements, and Enhanced Exploration

Among the new features in this remake are several upgrades to Link’s abilities: swimming and underwater diving are improved, and jumping is now a player-controlled action. Swapping items has been refined with an intuitive, single-button shortcut. Fully-voiced dialogue brings new depth to all cutscenes, modernizing the narrative delivery.

Exploration also sees a boost—Hyrule Castle Town now includes newly accessible locations never seen in prior editions. Added gameplay mechanics, such as the dash for quick movement and a world-wide, real-time day–night cycle, ensure time flows continuously throughout the game. Nintendo has deliberately kept loading screens to preserve the signature pacing and ambiance of the original.

With support for the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in microphone, the game enables players to control Link’s ocarina by humming, whistling, or singing melodies, as demonstrated during the preview event.

Supplementary Content: Music, Amiibo, and Companion App

The presentation wrapped up by revealing extra features that enhance the Ocarina of Time experience. A new companion app, Zelda Notes, will provide opportunities to record screenshots, complete exploration-based mini-quests for rewards, create custom ocarina melodies, and participate in a themed quiz.

Reflecting the series’ musical legacy, an original theme for the remake will appear on Nintendo Music. Additionally, a pair of amiibo figures designed for this new version will be released on launch day and grant access to exclusive in-game masks for dedicated fans and collectors.

By combining classic nostalgia with brand-new technology, Nintendo’s reimagining of this iconic adventure is poised to take center stage in the Nintendo Switch 2’s lineup when it arrives on November 5.
