Nodusfall offers a promising dark fantasy action experience

With Nodusfall, HoYoverse is venturing into bold new territory, opting for a darker, more grounded style rather than the colorful anime aesthetic seen in their previous blockbusters. First impressions from Gamescom 2023 highlight an innovative approach to its signature boss-centric gameplay, presenting both visual and thematic departures from the studio’s established norms.

A Gritty New Tone for HoYoverse

Unlike the lively atmospheres familiar to fans of games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Nodusfall immerses players in a world shaped by subdued colors, dangerous creatures, and environments evocative of the dark fantasy genre. At the recent Gamescom event in Cologne, attendees took part in cooperative boss challenges built for four players, each choosing between classes with distinct combat roles and confronting mythic foes.

The event’s hands-on session let participants select from four characters—two focused on close-range fighting and two designed for ranged attacks, with every playstyle offering a healing option. Standout among them was a ranged specialist equipped with a mechanical arm, combining heavy damage output with safe positioning for those preferring to attack from a distance. Success required players to select a role that fit their preferences and to collaborate tightly with their group to overcome tough boss enemies.

Deep Yet Accessible Combat

Combat in Nodusfall is both approachable and layered, featuring real-time action where regular strikes build up a gauge that powers special attacks. Each hero is armed with a secondary move—the archer, for instance, uses a bomb arrow inflicting damage over time after landing a shot. Four additional abilities, each with its own cooldown, round out every character’s toolkit.

Examples include the archer’s evasive backstep paired with a strong arrow, ideal for repositioning, as well as a skill that calls forth a spirit wolf for close-quarters damage. Abilities come at the cost of stamina, but the stamina system allows for considerable flexibility compared to similar titles. Strategic maneuvering is encouraged by wide attack ranges, letting distance-focused units offer support from afar or intervene up close when the situation demands, creating opportunities for both solo heroics and seamless teamwork during hectic moments.

Boss Encounters with Mythical Depth

Players faced off against legendary creatures during the demo, such as Qiongqi—rooted in Chinese mythology—and the Maldrake, emblematic of classic dragon adversaries. Boss fights unfolded across escalating phases, increasing the challenge as the encounter progressed. The battle with Maldrake opened with classic dragon tactics—fiery breath, bites, and wing attacks. Things changed dramatically as the creature transformed midfight and a knight emerged from its chest, turning the focus to the agile, polearm-wielding Maldrake Knight and forcing a complete shift in player strategy.

The complexity of enemies and the necessity for dynamic teamwork was clear, with squads needing to communicate and adapt on the fly. Hazards like health-draining pools of black goo on the battlefield demanded quick thinking, ensuring that battles stayed intense and required experimentation with character abilities.

Plans for Monetisation and Future Features

With Nodusfall set to launch as a free-to-play game, the specifics of its revenue model remain a hot topic. HoYoverse has clarified that the character unlock system will move away from the gacha and banner formats used in Genshin Impact, letting players earn new heroes by simply playing. Cosmetic items may form the cornerstone of the game’s monetisation, though concrete details are still pending.

So far, the cooperative boss battles, emphasis on accessibility, and fresh visual direction have earned Nodusfall a warm reception from both newcomers and seasoned HoYoverse fans. Drawing from classic mythological themes and tactical real-time action, the title is creating significant anticipation ahead of its wider release. More information on solo play and the full monetisation system is yet to be shared, but hands-on sessions point towards a strong new addition to the action RPG field.
