Meta tests new VR glasses featuring enhanced IMAX support

The newly announced Meta VR Glasses were revealed at the annual Connect event, with an eye on delivering enhanced wearability and next-level immersive entertainment. Slated to be available next spring, this advanced device will enter the market with a starting price of $1,299.99.

Revolutionary Lightweight Build and Performance

During the event, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted that this latest hardware marks the company’s most meaningful advancement in recent memory, departing sharply from previous cumbersome designs. He noted, “A lot of people agree that augmented reality glasses with holograms will be part of the future, but they’re less interested in wearing a headset,” emphasizing the demand for more user-friendly solutions.

Weighing in at just one-fifth the heft of the Meta Quest 3, the glasses closely mimic regular eyewear, which is a significant shift away from the bulkier styles of older Meta products. The reduced weight is largely thanks to a frame crafted from magnesium alloy and a sophisticated processing system utilizing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite chip. Instead of being tethered, users benefit from a compact computing puck responsible for both operations and battery power—a feature that fits comfortably into a pocket and enables greater mobility than traditional VR setups.

Enhanced Cinematic Experience and IMAX Approval

Targeting those passionate about entertainment, the Meta VR Glasses offer top-tier visual and audio fidelity. The integrated micro-OLED panels achieve a 5K Infinite Display with 37 pixels per degree, and Dolby Vision support further improves the viewer’s experience. Dolby Atmos audio enhancement also caters specifically to film lovers.

Significantly, these glasses have earned recognition as the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device ever, based on Meta’s announcement. This enables access to IMAX-filmed content, bringing the wide aspect ratio and ultra-crisp imagery typical of the cinema to users’ homes—one of the rare ways to enjoy this format outside an actual IMAX theater.

Further strengthening the range of available media, Meta has joined forces with Disney. As of November, Disney+ subscribers will gain access to a selection of exclusive 3D movies, including various Marvel films. This partnership promises “immersive environments, dynamic effects, stunning 3D visuals, and spatial audio,” according to Meta, fusing real-world and virtual elements for a more engaging experience that merges movie watching with interactive gaming elements.

Advanced Controls and Virtual Assistant

For seamless usability, the Meta VR Glasses come equipped with Meta AI, a virtual assistant designed to handle voice-activated commands such as content playback and app launching. Additionally, hand gesture recognition is built in for versatile interactions.

By combining gesture and voice controls, users can navigate apps or start movies simply by speaking or gesturing, leaving behind the need for remotes or gamepads, and considerably streamlining the user experience compared to earlier devices.

Positioning and Launch Details

With these new VR glasses, Meta signals a move towards gradual, substantive progress in immersive tech, opting to concentrate less exclusively on the Metaverse. The focus is now on prominent breakthroughs and everyday entertainment uses that directly fit into consumers’ existing routines.

The device’s spring 2025 release timeframe and initial cost of $1,299.99 firmly establish it in the premium category, reflecting Meta’s belief in its appeal and innovation. Observers will be watching closely to gauge whether these distinct features can foster broader mainstream adoption of both virtual and augmented reality.
