The recently released Spider-Man: Brand New Day has impacted more than just theater audiences—it’s also driving strong growth in sales and engagement for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, almost three years after the game’s first launch. This situation demonstrates the way major film premieres can breathe new life into established video games, particularly when strong franchise overlap exists between cinemas and consoles.
Film Debut Sparks Remarkable Sales and Player Activity
Following the global cinema premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on 30th July, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 experienced a notable jump in sales. Data provided by Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott reveals that this blockbuster film resulted in 316,000 extra copies being sold for the 2023 action game across PlayStation 5 and PC.
For Sony, these additional game sales are estimated to have brought in another $11 million (£8.14 million) in revenue. Notably, about 20 percent of those sales represented physical versions, which is significant in the predominantly digital landscape. At the same time, with the game now included in PlayStation Plus’ Extra tier, new players continued to join via subscription, expanding the audience even further without direct purchases.
Beyond just sales, the movie’s launch caused Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to surpass one million daily active users for the first time since its release week—a sign of the tightly woven relationship between screen entertainment and video games.
Discounts and Movie-Themed Content Amplify Growth
This surge didn’t come from the film alone. Elliott pointed to a mix of factors, including special pricing that coincided with the cinematic debut. PlayStation 5 owners saw Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offered at $30 for a limited period. This deal boosted daily purchases to almost 15,000, much higher than the roughly 6,300 daily sales observed during a February promotion. Meanwhile, PC fans on Steam also drove substantial sales, undeterred by its $40 price point.
Added momentum came from exclusive in-game content launched alongside the film, such as a new Spider-Man suit modeled after the Brand New Day movie design. Players can learn about all the enhancements here.
Insomniac Celebrates Milestone While Anticipating Wolverine Release
Currently, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has achieved lifetime sales of 18.2 million copies, with 92 percent sold for the PlayStation 5, according to Elliott’s projections. Total revenue from the title now exceeds $1.2 billion (£888.6 million), marking it as a huge success for Sony and reinforcing the effectiveness of media synergy and the broad appeal of Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe.
Next up for Insomniac, the studio responsible for the Spider-Man games, is Marvel’s Wolverine, set for release on 15th September after years focused on Spider-Man. The incoming title will depart from the open-world style and instead present a more linear narrative structure. Though Wolverine lacks the instant brand power of Spider-Man, the game is expected to enjoy heightened attention as fans anticipate the X-Men’s arrival in December’s Avengers: Doomsday.
The significant lift in engagement and sales for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in the wake of Brand New Day’s debut underscores how coordinated movie releases and game updates can benefit the entire entertainment ecosystem, serving as a prime example for Sony and the wider industry.
