Lemon Tree Hotels Plans Expansion in UAE Thailand and Maldives

With ambitions to grow beyond its home base, Lemon Tree Hotels is gearing up to strengthen its position in overseas markets. The prominent hospitality group is targeting international hot spots popular among Indian tourists, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Thailand, and the Maldives, with the goal of boosting its global presence.

Expanding in High-Traffic Destinations

Having already set up properties in Nepal and Dubai, Lemon Tree Hotels is now planning to extend to other destinations frequently visited by Indian travelers. During the Q1 earnings call, Patanjali Keswani, the company’s executive chairman, highlighted that their expansion strategy involves choosing markets located within approximately three hours of flying time from India. This aligns closely with the preferences and travel behavior of their core demographic.

Keswani summed up the approach by saying, “Go where your customers go,” during the call. The group’s international plans rest largely on the idea of drawing upon its established Indian customer base. Lemon Tree expects that meeting travelers in various locations will foster even stronger brand allegiance.

Strengthening Loyalty through Overseas Growth

Supporting this international expansion effort are insights drawn from the chain’s current operations. Keswani reported that about 45% of Lemon Tree’s demand comes from repeat guests. Interestingly, close to half of this repeat clientele hasn’t joined Lemon Tree’s 2.5 million-member loyalty program yet. This is seen as a valuable opportunity to deepen connections with frequent patrons, particularly as the brand expands to more international holiday spots favored by Indian guests.

Constructing hotels in well-loved travel hubs within close flying distance from India was described by Keswani as a smart move for Indian hospitality companies. By following this strategy, the chain hopes to boost both returning bookings and membership in its loyalty scheme by providing Indian travelers with familiar accommodation options overseas.

Strategic Regional Growth

By focusing on locations reachable in a three-hour flight from India, Lemon Tree is making a strategic choice to prioritize efficiency and maximize overlap with its current customer base. The aim is to build an initial international footprint that complements existing demand from Indian tourists and business guests, setting the stage for possible entry into farther away markets at a later time.

Staying consistent with its data-driven approach, Lemon Tree is targeting areas where Indian traveler presence is already substantial, ensuring that new overseas properties maintain a direct connection to its main customer segment.

As rivalry in the Indian hospitality sector continues to intensify, Lemon Tree Hotels is positioning itself to strengthen occupancy and brand presence by expanding into nearby destinations loved by Indian travelers. The company’s plan is to harness the power of its high guest retention—creating a support network of hotels that customers will trust, no matter where they venture.
