KnitWell Group appoints chief digital and data officer

Angelica Munson has been named KnitWell Group’s inaugural chief digital and customer data officer, marking a significant expansion of the executive team for the organization that owns Ann Taylor, Talbots, and Chico’s. This new role is designed to drive digital innovation and harness the power of customer data to fuel business growth.

Responsibilities to Cover Digital Marketing, AI, and Personalization

According to a September 22 press release, Munson will be tasked with shaping KnitWell Group’s approach to digital marketing, overseeing the use of AI-driven tools and developing customer personalization strategies. Her extensive background will support integration of technology, commerce, and insights to elevate customer engagement across the company’s brands, which also include Loft, White House Black Market, and Soma.

In her new position, Munson is charged with leading digital and data enterprise projects, utilizing marketing technologies and customer analytics to enhance loyalty and foster long-term growth. These technology-driven efforts are seen as critical to the ongoing success of KnitWell’s comprehensive women’s apparel portfolio.

Background in Beauty and Fashion Technology

Munson previously served as global chief digital officer at Shiseido Group, where she was instrumental in crafting the company’s worldwide digital direction. She spearheaded the Beauty Tech Lab initiative, which introduced AI-powered skin diagnostic solutions to the Shiseido brand. Her experience also includes leadership roles at Fast Retailing—the owner of Theory and Helmut Lang—as well as managing digital operations for Estée Lauder’s Clinique label.

Lizanne Kindler, executive chair and CEO of KnitWell Group, commented, “Angelica is a highly respected digital and transformation leader whose experience sits at the intersection of customer insight, technology, marketing, and commerce. Her expertise in building enterprise capabilities across data, digital, and customer engagement will help create the tools, insights, and infrastructure our brands need to continue growing and thriving.”

KnitWell Group’s Growth and Ownership Structure

Three years ago, KnitWell Group emerged, consolidating brands like Ann Taylor, Loft, and Talbots in the wake of Ascena Group’s bankruptcy and subsequent restructuring. During this period, private equity firm Sycamore Partners also acquired Lane Bryant and Lou & Grey, further strengthening its collection of retail assets.

Sycamore Partners made another major move in 2024 by purchasing Chico’s FAS—which includes the Chico’s flagship, White House Black Market, and Soma—for $1 billion. Following this acquisition, KnitWell Group incorporated the Chico’s brands into its operating platform. Today, KnitWell Group is one of Sycamore Partners’ key retail holdings, featured alongside other investments such as Staples and Torrid in their portfolio.

On another front, Ann Taylor is launching efforts to rejuvenate its brand, recently debuting its first significant integrated campaign in nearly a decade to reconnect with consumers and drive growth. More information about this initiative can be found here.

Looking Ahead

KnitWell Group is looking to the future with Angelica Munson leading its digital initiatives, aiming to deepen customer relationships through technology and tailor-made marketing. Her strategic direction is expected to secure a competitive advantage for the company, supporting its ambitions for continued growth, loyalty, and digital leadership.
