Hideo Kojima plans to continue making games at age 63

As he celebrates significant achievements—including entering his 64th year—Hideo Kojima, the renowned game designer known for franchise hits like Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, has stated explicitly that retirement is not on his agenda.

Kojima took to X for an introspective update about his professional journey, noting he has ambitious plans to commemorate both four decades in gaming and the 10th birthday of his studio, Kojima Productions. Alongside his message, he posted a detailed video presenting the newly updated Lumens statue, now on display within Kojima Productions’ offices.

Double Anniversary Celebrations Set for 2024

Reflecting on this year’s dual milestones, Kojima wrote on social media, “I’ve turned 63. Each year, the number of obligations and aspirations in my life just increases. Meanwhile, my remaining time is decreasing. How I spend every moment—and how I choose to live—requires constant reevaluation.”

In 2024, Kojima is celebrating his 40th year developing video games and the tenth anniversary of Kojima Productions, established after his exit from Konami. A major event, the “Kojipro Exhibition,” will take place at the Azabudai Hills Gallery, running from late October until the end of the year. For this occasion, the office’s well-known Ludens statue has been redesigned and is now referred to as the “10th Anniversary Ludens.”

Ongoing Dedication to Gaming

Though speculation continues about possible ventures into new media, Kojima affirmed that creating games remains his top priority. “Once I assume responsibility, I can’t simply abandon it… Game development will continue to receive my full energy going forward. Thank you for your ongoing support,” he emphasized.

While industry figures like Warren Spector of Deus Ex fame have recently announced retirements after similar tenures, Kojima reported that he is energized by emerging opportunities. He has publicly entertained the idea of exploring filmmaking and other creative projects, describing these possibilities in a number of interviews focusing on future work. Nevertheless, all signs point to Kojima remaining firmly rooted in games for now.

Several New Games Underway

Multiple fresh titles are currently in production at Kojima Productions. This includes the much-talked-about experimental horror game “OD.” Development on this project is proceeding unimpeded, despite recent layoffs at Xbox, as confirmed by industry sources.

Meanwhile, “Physint,” a stealth-action title for PlayStation, has been announced and is already generating excitement, despite limited details being made public. As work on these projects advances, more information and sneak peeks are anticipated. Interested fans can catch the Death Stranding official trailer here.

What Lies Ahead

Kojima’s own statements reinforce his resolve to make the most of every opportunity and to be deliberate about how he uses his time. With multiple titles unfolding and landmark anniversaries in 2024, the celebrated creator is set to have a prominent presence in gaming for the foreseeable future.
