Google Pixel Emergency Features to Enable for Safety

Pixel smartphones integrate an array of emergency and safety features, but to use them to their fullest potential, users need to configure certain tools beforehand. The Personal Safety app on Pixel devices encompasses numerous crucial functionalities, empowering users to be ready if faced with unexpected situations.

Centralized Emergency Tools with the Personal Safety App

Starting with the Pixel 4a model, all Google Pixel devices come installed with the Personal Safety app, which integrates key emergency utilities. While non-Pixel Android devices can also access this app from the Play Store, not every feature may be accessible or supported.

Within the Personal Safety app, it’s possible to add critical data such as allergies, blood type, medication details, and emergency contacts—these details are managed in the Your info > Medical information and Emergency contacts sections. To ensure first responders can retrieve this information without needing the device password, enable Emergency info access > Show when locked. This way, swiping up on the lock screen and selecting Emergency > View emergency info will display the necessary details. The app also supports real-time location sharing using the Emergency Sharing feature, and your phone will send your location automatically through the Android Emergency Location Service (ELS) during 911 calls, unless you’ve switched this option off in Settings.

Automated Assistance: Safety Check

With the Safety Check feature, users can set up scheduled check-ins for times when they’re potentially at risk—like walking home late or using a rideshare. This involves picking a timer duration, providing a reason for the Safety Check, and designating contacts to receive alerts. If a check-in isn’t acknowledged at the selected time, the app automatically sends out notifications to chosen contacts, who are pre-informed via text about the Safety Check’s setup. Upon receiving a prompt, users can indicate I’m OK, initiate Start sharing now, or opt to Call 911 directly.

Emergency SOS and Car Crash Detection Capabilities

The Emergency SOS suite, found at Settings > Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS, allows Pixel users to quickly contact help, share their location, and optionally record a video during an urgent event. You can choose a preferred emergency number, customize notification settings, and activate Emergency SOS by quickly pressing the power button five or more times.

Another advanced feature, Car Crash Detection, makes use of Pixel’s sensors, sound analysis, and location data to determine if an accident has taken place. For it to alert authorities effectively, it must have permissions granted for location, the microphone, and physical activity detection. Should the device detect a collision and get no response from the user, it will call emergency services automatically. Availability of this feature is dependent on your region and local laws.

Emergency Alerts & Satellite SOS for No-Service Situations

To receive timely updates for severe weather conditions or AMBER alerts, users can fine-tune these notifications in Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Crisis alerts, which include localized and real-time information with reliable Google Search links, are enabled by default, but settings are customizable in the Safety & emergency menu. Earthquake alerts are available for people located in California, Oregon, and Washington, and these too can be toggled on or off as preferred.

If you’re in a place without cellular or wireless coverage, Pixel 9 models and newer (except Pixel 9a) add another layer of security with Satellite SOS. When coverage is unavailable and emergency services need to be reached, the Satellite SOS option appears. By tapping it, and provided Google Messages is the default SMS app, users can send emergency texts via satellite, answer guided questions about the scenario, and reach out to emergency contacts and first responders through a dedicated chat service.

Customization: Lock Screen Messages for Fast Access

A custom message showing on your lock screen can facilitate quick assistance by displaying emergency or important contact details. This function is also helpful for routine situations such as lost devices or highlighting specific medical conditions for instant identification by emergency staff or bystanders.

Preparing for emergencies by configuring these Google Pixel features ahead of time means Pixel users can rely on rapid access to critical information and help when every moment matters.
