Double Fine announces new game Thank You Bus Driver after Xbox split

After parting ways with Xbox, Double Fine is gearing up for its first major independent release, planning to debut its latest game, Thank You Bus Driver, on 14 October for a variety of PC platforms.

Studio Launches Thank You Bus Driver After Xbox Split

Famous for titles such as Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, the studio has introduced Thank You Bus Driver, a whimsical simulation where players assume the challenging job of a small-town bus driver. This game is the first to emerge from Double Fine since it left Xbox earlier this summer, a move that followed widespread layoffs and restructuring throughout the industry.

Gamers will be able to get their hands on the new simulator starting mid-October on Steam, Itch.io, and GOG. Featuring a striking black-and-white visual palette, Thank You Bus Driver delivers classic Double Fine slapstick humor layered over unconventional, innovative mechanics that fans have come to expect from the developer.

Gameplay Emphasizes Rule Enforcement and Absurdity

Thank You Bus Driver sets players the task of transporting people to their stops within strict time limits while simultaneously enforcing a variety of quirky regulations aboard the bus. With a gameplay twist inspired by titles like Papers, Please, the driver can stretch out their “freakishly long arms” to maintain discipline among passengers—serving up strict order with a distinctly comedic edge characteristic of Double Fine.

Announced just several weeks ago through an official statement from the studio, the title has quickly gained attention for its bold style and for showcasing Double Fine’s revitalized creativity post-Xbox split. The company was one of five affected by Microsoft’s spinoff plans, which are expected to result in about 3,200 job losses across those firms by next summer. Within Double Fine itself, the transition led to the elimination of a quarter of their workforce, according to the studio’s confirmation.

Introducing Double Fine Action Labs for Experimental Titles

Marking the first release under the banner of Double Fine Action Labs, Thank You Bus Driver signals a new focus on “weird, little games” that can be produced and launched with more agility than previous large-scale ventures. Through this new label, Double Fine aims to offer more experimental projects directly to its player base. This also paves the way for possible future titles that could emerge from the studio’s ongoing Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter campaign.

Tim Schafer, the founder of Double Fine, recently shared his enthusiasm for digital-first releases and creative independence. He voiced strong support for services like Game Pass, saying, “I’m very pro Game Pass, and hope it succeeds and goes forward.” Addressing the broader industry upheaval, Schafer commented, “People are playing games, people are making money, so I don’t know why there is a big loss of jobs. I assume someone is being greedy somewhere.”

Double Fine Sets Sights on a Creative Future

As Double Fine moves forward with its reclaimed independence, the studio is set to make its mark with Thank You Bus Driver and the Action Labs initiative. The upcoming release on 14 October promises to deliver both fresh gameplay and the signature, off-kilter humor that has defined Double Fine’s legacy—a testament to its enduring commitment to inventive game ideas.
