After its split from Xbox, Double Fine has unveiled its first independently produced title: the slapstick simulation game Thank You Bus Driver. This quirky simulation, now available for pre-order and arriving soon on PC, shifts the developer’s focus as it navigates its new independence.
Following a major round of industry restructuring, Double Fine reclaimed its status as an independent studio, keeping both its full back catalogue and all existing intellectual property.
Debut Release Following Xbox Departure
As the studio’s inaugural independent project post-Xbox, Thank You Bus Driver thrusts players into the driver’s seat as a town bus operator with a flair for chaos and a reputation for dealing briskly with disruptive passengers. The game, billed as a “comedy simulation,” challenges players to prioritize reaching the next stop above all else—even if that involves referencing your map while making a turn or barreling through a cornfield. The Steam listing states, “Getting to your next stop is all that matters. That might mean pulling up your map mid-turn, or it might mean a shortcut through the corn field. Avoiding pedestrians, incoming traffic, or the fence directly in front of you is optional.”
Not only must players embrace speed, but they’re also encouraged to “slap faster,” keeping their passengers in line and ejecting any who hinder their campaign for the ultimate thank you. Featuring the distinctive humor and over-the-top gameplay Double Fine is known for, Thank You Bus Driver promises an irreverent and comedic adventure.

Pre-Orders Now Open; Awaiting Release Date
Gamers interested in Thank You Bus Driver can pre-order it now for PC through Steam and GOG. While the store pages mention that the game’s release is “coming soon,” there is not yet an official launch date.
Studio Changes and Staff Reduction
Double Fine experienced significant upheavals as part of Xbox’s extensive reorganisation, which was formally announced by CEO Asha Sharma in July. This restructuring had an impact on approximately 3,200 positions across the Microsoft gaming division. Amid these shifts, Double Fine and others, including Compulsion Games, regained independence with full control over their intellectual property and game libraries.
The move to an independent model, however, came at a cost: Double Fine cut about 25 percent of its 90-person work force. The studio stated that these layoffs were essential “to reach a size that we can sustain.”
Compulsion Games, the developer of We Happy Few and South of Midnight, underwent a similar transition during this restructuring, confirming that it maintained control of its catalogue and IP.
The Future for Double Fine
Now back to being fully independent, Double Fine is refocusing its energy on creative new games, starting with Thank You Bus Driver. While many aspects of the title are still under wraps, the game’s satirical premise and playful tone are emblematic of Double Fine’s celebrated work.
