With a new approach for its flagship title, Bungie shared that it will be bringing back removed campaigns and raids to Destiny 2, aiming to revive older content as part of an updated vision for the game. The announcement comes after a turbulent period internally, including changes in leadership at the famed studio.
Leadership Addresses Setbacks, Reaffirms Player Commitment
Through a public statement, studio head Poria Torkan and product chief Josh Deane openly discussed the challenges Bungie has faced. “Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players,” they explained, acknowledging the difficulty of regaining community trust and noting that fans would not immediately accept their renewed promises. However, they pledged to take concrete steps for ongoing improvements to both Destiny and Marathon.
This message follows job cuts at Bungie; at least 290 employees were laid off earlier this year. At that time, the studio released its last Destiny 2 update and media reports suggested the absence of any new Destiny-related titles in development, including Destiny 3.
Restoring Classic Destiny 2 Content
The company’s new plan marks a reversal of its “vaulting” practice. Bungie intends to bring back previously removed Destiny 2 campaigns, raids, and locations—content stored in “the vault”—for all players over the coming months. The team noted that additional technical work is needed, as updates to lighting, combat encounters, and core systems are necessary to meet current Destiny 2 quality standards.
Torkan and Deane emphasized that “Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future.” They reiterated Bungie’s commitment to telling more stories and creating new worlds, insisting on the importance of allowing development teams the time necessary to honor the series: “All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”
Updating Marathon, Committing to Broader Appeal
In regard to Marathon, Bungie addressed the game’s underwhelming player numbers and acknowledged the need for improvement, stating their goal is to “evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it,” while also continuing to build on its strengths.
As part of its plan for Marathon, Bungie will introduce a permanent PvE mode and a social space in December, an effort to attract a wider player base beyond those interested in intense competitive matches.
Existing Franchises Front and Center, No New Game Reveals
Bungie clarified that no new projects are set for announcement. The main priority is breathing new life into Destiny 2 by restoring legacy experiences and focusing on engaging the player community. Efforts to refine and broaden Marathon also remain central, as the studio seeks to regain stability and trust following a difficult stretch.
