Bungie Denies Rumored Destiny-Marathon Crossover, Clarifies Independence of Both Franchises
Speculation suggesting a crossover between Destiny and Marathon, two of Bungie’s standout franchises, has been dismissed by the studio’s creative director. The rumors, driven by a widely-disseminated leak promising big shake-ups for both series, claimed the titles would eventually exist within a single shared universe.
Bungie Responds to Online Leak and Theories
An anonymous source posted on 4Chan, later summarized and discussed on Reddit, alleging that the narratives and lore from Destiny and Marathon would be connected by Bungie. According to the rumors, Marathon would establish the origins of humanity’s Golden Age, setting the stage for future Destiny content. Additional details from the leak indicated that not only were narrative elements overlapping but that developer teams and gameplay mechanics from Destiny would appear in Marathon.
In response to the growing buzz, Julia Nardin, Marathon’s creative director and a major contributor to Destiny, took to X to clarify: “As someone who’s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the ‘leak’ about us merging the two IPs is fake… Please don’t believe everything you read online.” [Source] She highlighted that, beyond their shared “Bungie DNA,” the two properties remain completely separate.
Rumored Gameplay Changes and Challenges for Marathon
The same set of leaks also made other claims. It stated that previous Destiny 2 developers had rejoined Bungie to contribute to Marathon, allegedly bringing with them ideas scrapped from Destiny expansions and an abandoned sequel. These rumors further proposed that Marathon would add Destiny-inspired gameplay, notably reputation and faction features, as well as launch a new multiplayer social space.
Among the more controversial details was the suggestion that Destiny 2 players would be incentivized to try Marathon by earning unique rewards for reaching specific Triumphs in Destiny’s final update. The intention, per the rumors, was to encourage a transfer of the Destiny community to Bungie’s fresh project.
Another point of discussion centers on Marathon’s commercial underperformance. At launch, analysts estimate sales were around 1.2 million copies, with the bulk purchased via Steam. According to SteamDB, daily concurrent users have now slipped below 3,000—an all-time low since release—pointing to player retention difficulties even after a promising start.
Reported Free-to-Play Transition and Upcoming Content
The alleged leak also described a purported shift for Marathon to a free-to-play model in December, a move associated with a significant delay for the game’s next major patch. This future update is said to bring a new permanent PvE activity called “Investigations,” which would blend the boss-hunting of Monster Hunter with the cooperative, objective-driven gameplay of Splatoon’s Salmon Run, allowing teams up to six to complete objectives and battle Destiny-style raid bosses on a dynamic map.
Additional changes reportedly in the works include redesigned maps, expanded in-game customization with new Shells, and further attempts to increase player engagement in a highly competitive landscape. All this comes at a time when Bungie has experienced other big changes, such as the June release of Destiny 2’s final major update and the announcement of no new Destiny expansions or a Destiny 3. Last month, several hundred Bungie employees were also laid off in another major transition for the company.
Destiny and Marathon’s Separate Futures Affirmed by Bungie
Bungie has made it clear that, despite ongoing fan interest in possible collaborations, Destiny and Marathon are set to operate as independent entities. Moving forward, the developer’s focus is on reenergizing Marathon and navigating a rapidly changing industry landscape, making any crossover or combined universe unlikely anytime soon.
