Following a major organisational overhaul at Xbox, Obsidian Entertainment—the acclaimed studio best known for its role-playing games—will now be overseen by Bethesda. Bethesda’s president has reassured employees that Obsidian’s distinct studio culture will be maintained despite the restructuring and recent layoffs.
Significant Studio Transfers Amid Xbox Reorganisation
During this round of wide-reaching changes to Xbox’s corporate structure, Microsoft reassigned key studios between its gaming branches. Obsidian Entertainment transitioned from the Xbox Game Studios group and is now directed by Bethesda. Meanwhile, studios such as Halo, Rare—notably responsible for Sea of Thieves—and World’s Edge (the team behind Age of Empires) have been moved under Activision’s stewardship.
This internal rearrangement comes after Xbox imposed extensive layoffs earlier in the year, leading to the termination of 1,600 positions and the closure of five first-party studios. The shakeup accelerated as another 268 employees were laid off from Xbox in this latest development.
Bethesda Commits to Obsidian’s Creative Vision
The integration of Obsidian within Bethesda’s organisation has raised concerns among fans that the developer might be reduced to a support role, especially as it works alongside Bethesda Game Studios on an upcoming Fallout title. Addressing these worries, Bethesda president Jill Braff assured the team that Obsidian’s signature creative approach will continue to shape the studio’s direction. “The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work,” Braff wrote in an internal communication.
Braff also stated that Feargus Urquhart, along with the existing leadership group, will remain at the helm of Obsidian and report directly to her. The Fallout series itself will stay under the leadership of Bethesda Game Studios. Braff described these changes as part of Microsoft’s “franchise-led model”, intended to clearly delineate each studio’s responsibility and anchor their top franchises under focused management.
Layoffs and a Sharper Emphasis on Well-Known Franchises
During the initial wave of Xbox layoffs this summer, Obsidian was affected with an estimated workforce reduction of about 25 percent, in addition to the cancellation of multiple projects. These measures reflected a corporate refocus on flagship franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Halo, and Fallout, a priority set by incoming CEO Asha Sharma.
Original IPs developed by Obsidian in recent years, such as Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, reportedly did not fulfill internal performance benchmarks. As a consequence, the studio has shifted attention back to established franchises, most particularly Fallout.
Outlook Remains Unsettled, but Studio Independence Stays Intact
Obsidian’s new reporting relationship to Bethesda symbolizes a pivotal transformation in the way Microsoft manages its in-house development teams. Although the outcome of these changes is still unclear, Bethesda’s leadership has made it clear they are dedicated to preserving Obsidian’s autonomy as the studio collaborates on the next wave of Fallout content. More specifics on the new Fallout undertaking and Obsidian’s future projects should be shared in the coming months.
