Barnes & Noble opens new store in Chicago

Drawing a substantial crowd on opening day, the renowned bookseller began a new chapter in downtown Chicago by launching its latest State Street outlet, underscoring its steady nationwide growth efforts.

Book enthusiasts lined up before 9:00 a.m. outside the new Barnes & Noble store in Chicago’s Loop on August 19. The steady flow of customers that day reflected the excitement surrounding the opening and demonstrated the growing support for the brand as it widens its reach across the United States.

Local Store Management Fuels Expansion

After enduring a 15-year decline in the number of physical storefronts, Barnes & Noble has redoubled its focus on growth. The company opened 60 new locations in 2023 and has kept up the momentum into 2024. By empowering store managers to tailor inventory and daily operations to local communities, the bookseller has revitalized its approach and fostered stronger connections with shoppers in various regions.

With more than 720 stores across the country today, Barnes & Noble continues to select high-interest neighborhoods and cities for expansion. “Our strategy remains focused on opening interesting, welcoming bookstores in communities that are excited to have us,” shared a Barnes & Noble spokesperson, highlighting the emphasis on community engagement and localized experience.

Reviving a Chicago Icon

Barnes & Noble’s new downtown location occupies a prime State Street site formerly home to Old Navy, and before that, Borders. Borders closed all of its stores in 2011, as covered in this news article. The State Street store is Barnes & Noble’s fourth new north Chicagoland site, joining other recent launches in Hyde Park, Oak Park, and Skokie—all opened during 2026.

Stretching across 20,000 square feet on two open levels (with a third not yet accessible), the store boasts a diverse inventory, from classics and nonfiction to manga, poetry, cookbooks, and more. In addition to its vast book offerings, the location features toys, puzzles, games, gifts, and magazines, along with areas for vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs.

Visitors will notice special features such as a dedicated Harry Potter corner, an entryway highlighted by Chicago-centered titles, and checkout stations welcoming guests with “words are magic.” Those heading toward the restrooms can enjoy a dramatic view of The Chicago Theatre through a hallway window.

Opening Day Highlights

The grand opening showcased a lineup of author events, headlined by Jasmine Warga—a New York Times bestselling author known for acclaimed works like “The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan” and “Other Words for Home.” Warga both led the ribbon-cutting ceremony and greeted readers at a signing session. Local authors Becca Grischow, Mikki Kendall, and Gloria Chao also made appearances, drawing readers from all around Chicago.

Reflecting on the opening, a company spokesperson remarked that the energetic atmosphere of the Loop created the perfect setting for Barnes & Noble’s return to a central and bustling part of the city, reinforcing its strategic importance to the bookseller’s overall expansion.

Recent Growth and Acquisitions

Since its acquisition by U.K.-headquartered Elliott Advisors in 2019, which resulted in its transition to a private company, Barnes & Noble has continued to reshape its business. In 2025, it acquired assets from the bankrupt Books Inc. for $3.25 million, while in 2024 it purchased Tattered Cover, a noted independent bookstore chain, for an undisclosed amount. These acquisitions reinforce the company’s commitment to growing its nationwide footprint and influence in bookselling.

The State Street opening in Chicago best exemplifies Barnes & Noble’s reinvigorated vision—marked by rapid store growth, thoughtful community engagement, and a dedication to a modern, locally-focused bookselling experience.
