Apple Wallet tips every user needs to know

With its ongoing development, Apple Wallet has become an essential resource for digital payments, smart ticketing, ID management, and storing digital credentials and keys. While millions use its fundamental tools through their iPhone or Apple Watch every day, the app hides an array of advanced and personalization features designed to make daily transactions easier and more convenient.

Use Express Mode for Swift Access—even on a Drained Battery

One particularly useful tool in Apple Wallet is Express Mode, which lets you instantly use designated transit cards, digital keys, or student IDs without having to confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Impressively, Express Mode remains accessible through a battery reserve, which means you can take public transportation or unlock select doors even when your phone won’t turn on. You can activate Express Mode by selecting your card or pass, tapping the three-dot icon, heading to Card Details, and finding either Express Transit Settings or Express Mode. Since this function skips authentication, anyone in possession of your device can take advantage of enabled cards or passes—so it’s safer to use it primarily for transit cards, not home or car keys, if security is a concern.

Make Use of Apple Cash Anywhere Through Virtual Card Numbers

While most vendors take Apple Pay, some businesses and websites still don’t. Apple Wallet addresses this with the option to create a virtual card number tied to your Apple Cash balance. This solution is perfect for remote, online, or phone orders, and also protects your main card information. Inside Wallet, select your Apple Cash card, tap its icon, verify your identity, and your virtual card number will display—plus, the unique three-digit security code changes every time for added protection.

Automate Card Actions Based on Location via Shortcuts

Integration with Shortcuts allows Apple Wallet users to automate the selection of a payment or loyalty card triggered by location. For example, if you want to always use a specific credit or rewards card at a frequently visited store, you can set up a Shortcut to suggest or show the right card automatically when you arrive. Head to the Library tab in Shortcuts, press “+”, search for “Card”, choose “Open Card”, and tie this to a location-based automation (using “Arrive”), selecting your desired pass or payment card for effortless, faster transactions.

Instant Transfers with Tap to Cash

The Tap to Cash feature provides a contactless, private way to send or receive money—no need to exchange phone numbers or emails. With Apple Cash activated, you begin by tapping your Apple Cash card, selecting Send or Request > Tap to Cash, entering the desired amount, confirming via double-click of your side button, and bringing both iPhones or Apple Watches together to complete the transfer instantly.

Controlled Sharing of Digital Keys

Apple Wallet supports a full range of key pass types, such as for homes, vehicles, hotels, and scooters. You can unlock doors or start engines with a tap, with the system even presenting the needed digital key as you approach. Scooter and car keys may also be securely shared; the sender can set restrictions like no further sharing, and—based on the car’s make—regulate options such as top speed and media access. After picking your car key, use the Share function, adjust permissions, choose to add an activation code, select the transmission method (Messages or AirDrop), and designate who’ll receive access.

Monitor Your Purchases and Deliveries from Within Wallet

Apple Wallet can do more than payments—order and shipping details for purchases made through Apple Pay can be tracked directly in the app. Enable this capability by visiting Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Order Tracking; recent purchases and delivery updates will then be visible after choosing the three-dot icon and navigating to Orders. Apple is also trialing a beta function using Apple Intelligence and Siri to automatically fetch order updates from connected Mail accounts, manageable as a separate setting.

Use Your iPhone as a Digital ID at Chosen Locations

Apple has introduced the option to store driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet, letting users show identification with just their iPhone. Currently, these digital IDs gain widest acceptance at airport TSA checkpoints and, in some U.S. locales, at entertainment sites or for app-based ID verification. You can add yours by tapping the “+” in Wallet, selecting Driver’s License and ID Cards, and following the instructions. However, this service is only available in specific states for now. There is also support for digital passports (learn more here) and an overview of participating states can be found here.

Authenticate Online Purchases on a Mac Using Your iPhone

If you run into limits using Apple Pay—such as on a closed MacBook or non-Safari browser—activate “Allow Payments on Mac” found in Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay. This enables your iPhone or Apple Watch to confirm purchases, making checkouts smoother even if your Mac lacks built-in biometric support.

Digitize Non-Supported Cards and Stay on Top of Recurring Payments

In cases where companies issue physical cards for entry, membership, or rewards, you can convert these to digital with third-party apps like MakePass and Pass2U Wallet. Additionally, Apple is developing a Create a Pass function for iOS 27, which you can read about here.

For those who use Apple Pay for ongoing billing or subscriptions, Wallet allows you to see merchants with pre-authorized charge privileges—find this by tapping the three-dot menu and going to Preauthorized Payments. You can revoke future charges by deleting their payment token, but for full cancellations you’ll still need to reach out to the provider directly.

As Apple Wallet’s functionality expands, exploring and utilizing these advanced techniques delivers more security, efficiency, and personal control. These lesser-known strategies empower iPhone and Apple Watch owners to handle commuting, shopping, and digital identity more easily than ever.
