Amazon boosts Whole Foods employee pay and benefits with $230M investment

Amazon has announced an investment surpassing $230 million to raise pay and deliver a far more robust benefits package for Whole Foods Market staff. This step marks another stride in blending the specialty grocer more closely with Amazon’s corporate and employment standards.

Major pay raises and benefits for Whole Foods workers

Late last week, Amazon disclosed its plans to boost compensation and benefits for frontline Whole Foods employees. Beginning September 28, store associates will be given higher hourly wages, with annual increases promised by the company. In a related initiative, a comprehensive benefits package aligned with Amazon’s policies will become available to Whole Foods workers starting January 1.

The company indicated that, with all benefits included, the average total compensation for store associates will exceed $29 per hour. Full-time workers are expected to see a benefits value rise of more than 75% compared to what is currently offered. These enhancements are available to both new hires and longtime staff, further weaving together Whole Foods and Amazon’s workplace systems.

Expanded health, family, and career resources introduced

With the upgraded benefits, qualifying full-time employees will gain access to comprehensive health plans for the first time. These plans include primary and behavioral health care with a $5 copay, and the addition of a One Medical membership allows for no-cost same-day and virtual medical visits.

Amazon added that nearly 20,000 part-time workers at Whole Foods will newly qualify for dental, vision, and basic life insurance—free of charge. Short- and long-term disability benefits will be fully covered by the company and automatically provided. Whole Foods staff who join an Amazon health plan will receive access to fertility and family-forming services, support with cancer care, and fully paid parental leave: up to 20 weeks for birthing parents and up to six weeks for adoptive and supporting parents.

Perks for employees aren’t limited to healthcare. All Whole Foods hourly associates will be granted a complimentary Amazon Prime membership and enjoy prescription discounts at Amazon Pharmacy, along with their existing 20% store discount. Next year, the “Career Choice” initiative—covering tuition and fees upfront for college, skills development, and certifications—will be extended to Whole Foods employees as well.

Ongoing operational integration through 2026

This enhancement in pay and benefits comes amid Amazon’s broader initiative to more fully integrate Whole Foods’ leadership and employee systems into Amazon’s overall grocery and corporate network. Beginning in mid-2025, this integration included appointing Whole Foods leaders to roles within Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery division and aligning administrative operations.

Corporate structure within the division was revamped in June 2025, and later that year Amazon established a December 2026 cutoff for all Whole Foods corporate employees to move onto Amazon’s compensation and benefits programs.

Enhanced support for families and employees with ongoing health needs

Amazon pointed out that the new benefits will deliver the greatest savings for those with family responsibilities or ongoing health care expenses. The improved coverage and additional support are designed to ensure greater financial and health stability for employees and their families.

This enhanced pay and benefits package demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to transforming work culture and standards throughout its grocery operations, and underscores its drive to achieve uniformity in employment practices between Whole Foods and Amazon as a whole.
