Amazon and Target October sales events return this year

Amazon and Target are bringing back their competing discount events this October, seeking to attract early holiday shoppers with time-limited bargains on a variety of merchandise.

Retail Powerhouses Set October 6–7 for Seasonal Discount Events

On Tuesday, press releases from both Amazon and Target confirmed their major fall sales will occur from October 6 to October 7. Over these two days, both retailers are aiming to entice buyers searching for deals on everything from groceries and home essentials to apparel and toys in anticipation of the holiday rush.

The sale at Amazon, titled Prime Big Deal Days, will be available exclusively to shoppers with paid Prime accounts. Discounts will include a rotating selection of grocery products, Shark appliances, and Phlur fragrances, with fresh promotions rolling out each day. Amazon is also getting ready for the holidays by spotlighting newly launched gift lists, alongside the debut of a special FAO Schwarz toy storefront offering exclusive items.

Meanwhile, Target’s Circle Deal Days event will run simultaneously and is accessible for free to members of its Target Circle loyalty program. For those who subscribe to the paid Target Circle 360, early access to the deals will be provided a day ahead of others. Shoppers can look forward to savings on seasonal decorations, toys, clothing, and more, with particular focus on Target’s popular brands like Cat & Jack and Threshold.

Holiday Sales Battle Heats Up Among Top Retailers

The competition for seasonal sales is intensifying this fall as major names like Walmart, Target, and e-commerce powerhouse Amazon unveil marketing pushes every October to reach consumers beginning their gift-buying early. Amazon’s vice president of North America marketing and Prime tech, Carmen Nestares, pointed out that these events assist shoppers in saving money as they complete their holiday shopping lists ahead of time.

This discount campaign is especially important for Target, as it pursues its current turnaround efforts. The chain reported an uptick in recent quarters, yet is keen to avoid repeating the Q4 sales slip experienced the previous year. In Q2 2023, Target posted net sales growth of 5.3% year over year, hitting $26.5 billion, even though momentum in categories like home goods and apparel lagged overall performance.

This October, Amazon’s sale comes in the wake of its annual Prime Day, which took place in June this year rather than the usual July timeline. The usual sales summary after Prime Day was not released. Nonetheless, Amazon’s Q2 online store net sales increased by 15%, reaching approximately $70.4 billion, while physical store sales rose by 4%, nearing $5.8 billion.

Early Holiday Deals Likely to Drive Shoppers Online

As buyers start their holiday shopping ahead of schedule, both Amazon and Target expect their October events to generate robust online engagement and spending. Exclusive memberships, curated gift shops, and special private label deals are some of the strategies being used to gain an upper hand in an increasingly crowded field. With both two-day sales nearing and new discounts soon to be revealed, competition for holiday spending is expected to escalate across the retail landscape.
