Airbnb expands into hotel bookings with new business strategy

With thousands of hotels now featured and an eye on developing a new multi-billion-dollar revenue stream, Airbnb is ramping up its presence in the hotel industry.

Hotels Gain Spotlight as Airbnb Changes Course

Airbnb’s attitude toward hotels has seen a dramatic transformation, led by CEO Brian Chesky, who previously dismissed the idea of listing hotels on the platform. At a Goldman Sachs conference this month, Chesky described the company’s change in philosophy, stating, “At some point, I stopped being ideological. I started becoming practical.” Whereas he once thought hotels would have no place on Airbnb, ongoing user demand eventually prompted Chesky to reconsider and embrace the move.

What began as a disruptive alternative to hotels has now evolved, as Chesky sees the inclusion of hotel listings as the cornerstone for Airbnb’s next “multi-billion-dollar businesses.”

Selective Listings and Broader Reach for Hoteliers

Eschewing the mass-market, open listing styles of Booking Holdings and Expedia, Airbnb applies strict criteria to the hotels it features and charges a lower commission compared to the major online travel agencies. Chesky pointed out that with access from more than 1.6 billion devices in the last year, Airbnb provides hotels a way to connect with guests they might not attract through traditional channels.

Hotel partners that have joined the platform report strong outcomes, thanks to exposure to new types of travelers unique to Airbnb’s audience.

Expansion Metrics and Prospects

As reported by AirDNA, there were 3,939 hotels using Airbnb’s new hotel listing system as of September 4, covering hundreds of different markets. Although these hotels currently account for only a “single-digit percentage of nights booked” on Airbnb, according to Chesky’s comments on second quarter results, the pace of growth in this area is accelerating.

Meanwhile, Airbnb’s mainstay home-sharing business remains robust, with gross booking value nearing $100 billion.

Unique Strategy and Market Dynamics

By choosing a curated selection model, Airbnb differentiates itself from other online travel agencies and demonstrates flexibility in responding to shifting consumer demands. The company leverages the scale of its brand and marketplace to offer value that competitors like Booking Holdings and Expedia may not deliver. As the number of hotel listings continues to increase, questions remain about how long Airbnb can maintain its selective approach and how its partnerships with hotel brands will progress.

Airbnb’s bold move into hotels, combining curated listings with rising guest interest, signals a pivotal shift likely to influence both the company’s future and the broader hospitality sector.
