AI enhances Target’s back-to-school shopping experience

Harnessing artificial intelligence, the retail powerhouse is enhancing both wish list functionality and the personalization of product recommendations, targeting increased shopper engagement during the essential back-to-school shopping window.

With the approach of a new school year, Target is deploying AI-driven options on its e-commerce site, introducing enhanced wish lists and recommendation features. These AI-powered wish lists alongside customized shopping prompts are designed to simplify and optimize the buying process for students and parents alike.

Customer Engagement Soars with AI Wish Lists

Brad Thompson, Senior Vice President of Technology at Target, reports that customers using digital wish lists exhibit about 45% greater demand in the back-to-school segment. In response, Target integrates AI to streamline wish list setup and tailor the experience to individual preferences, making it easier and more relevant.

Thompson noted, “We will use AI to make product recommendations as people are starting to create their wish list.” The company’s system factors in previous purchase data, shopping patterns of similar users, and occasionally, classroom- or school-specific requirements to suggest the most fitting products. He underscored the significant impact this technology has on how consumers prepare for the academic season.

Personalization Through Smart Recommendations

Personalization at Target expands beyond wish lists with their AI-powered “next best action widget.” This feature actively recommends timely actions—like initiating a back-to-school wish list—based on the shopping context and season. Its dynamic nature allows it to adjust recommendations as shoppers’ needs change throughout the year.

Thompson added, “We use AI to sort through all of the signals in the browse session for that guest to recommend the next best action.” Thus, user behavior such as recent buys or current site activity factors into the algorithm to determine personalized suggestions in real time.

In June, Target launched several new initiatives for the back-to-school rush, including exclusive deals on Target Circle 360 memberships, the debut of new proprietary school uniform collections, and a limited-time collaboration with LoveShackFancy for a special product line.

Why Back-to-School Shopping Matters for Retail

The importance of the back-to-school season is clear in retail strategy. Findings from the annual report by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Prosper Insights & Analytics reveal that back-to-school spending for K-12 will hit $43.3 billion in 2023, while projected outlays for college students are at $103.5 billion. With these record-setting forecasts, businesses like Target are focusing on technological innovation to tap into this seasonal surge.

Thompson mentioned the period is not only a commercial opportunity but also a chance for Target to test and refine new features. The rise in site traffic enables ongoing A/B tests for digital improvements. One such feature uses AI to dynamically curate homepage and key page content, optimizing the interface for each individual guest based on their browsing and purchasing history.

Future Plans: Scaling Personalization with AI

Target is intent on elevating its personalization strategy. Thompson outlined plans to use AI to deliver highly individualized content, striving for “one-on-one hyper personalized page layout.” No matter where a shopper is on the site—be it the homepage, product detail page, or search results—AI will reconfigure the layout on the fly to suit the particular customer, offering a more tailored experience at every touchpoint.

By leaning further into advanced AI tools, Target aims to maintain its competitive advantage, meet evolving consumer expectations, and deliver engaging digital experiences during high-stakes retail events like back-to-school shopping.
