Google has introduced the new Pixel Watch 5, building on last year’s model with a set of significant software and hardware refinements. Even though it looks similar on the outside, the latest release promises exclusive new features and notable performance upgrades to distinguish it from earlier Pixel Watches. While certain enhancements will extend to prior generations, the latest hardware enjoys a clear advantage.
AI and Performance Improvements From Enhanced Processor
Equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, the Pixel Watch 5 surpasses its predecessor, which utilized the regular W5 Gen 2. Google touts 50% more RAM, a 12% increase in CPU power, and a 20% overall speed improvement over the previous model. Although benchmarking data is not yet available, these upgrades are said to deliver more advanced on-device artificial intelligence features, responsive even when the watch is offline, and offer reduced latency for smoother use.
The watch introduces the “Raise to Talk” feature, which lets users launch Gemini—Google’s AI assistant—just by lifting their wrist. The device also integrates Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions (formerly Magic Cue), so users receive timely, context-driven recommendations, such as instantly sharing flight data through your apps when prompted. All AI-powered actions rely on the new chip to process information swiftly and securely, keeping data on the device itself.
Health, Fitness, and Personalization Upgrades
Google is bringing new capabilities to its health tracking lineup. “Health Guardian,” a feature set to monitor insulin resistance, blood pressure, and sleep breathing patterns, will soon launch on both the Pixel Watch 4 and 5. Only the Pixel Watch 5, however, debuts six unique additions focused on pioneering fitness and health technologies.
One standout is the breathing emergency detection capability, which rolls out first to users in Europe. Utilizing its PPG, accelerometer, and barometer sensors, the watch can detect situations where the wearer’s breathing stops—due to issues such as choking, pneumonia, or drug toxicity—and, after lack of response, it will automatically alert emergency services and transmit a live location to expedite aid.
For those who value fitness tracking, the watch’s GPS accuracy is now twice as precise as previous models, with Google claiming it even outcompetes the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro under difficult conditions. This improvement is credited to the device’s Google Maps integration, which uses 3D models of buildings for ray tracing, along with dynamic corrections using data from worldwide weather stations.
Sleep monitoring also benefits from a 15% boost in accuracy for sleep stage detection. Complementary updates include bedtime automations that can pause audiobooks and the introduction of a new bedtime-specific watch face for more convenient overnight use.
New Looks and Customizable Watch Faces
The fifth generation keeps the familiar 320 PPI, 3,000 nit “Actua 360” display, offered in both 41mm and 45mm sizes, as seen on the Pixel Watch 4. Users can now choose from new hues—Fog, Olive, and Canyon—with the Canyon option limited to the 41mm version. The 45mm model is available in the exclusive Stephen Curry Special Edition.
Customization gets a lift thanks to two fresh watch faces and a collection of 11 new “glanceable” complications. Users seeking more variety have the option to create personalized watch designs using AI. For a preview of the new Weave and Chronograph faces, 9to5Google features images here.
Gradual Hardware Change Paired With Cutting-edge Software
While the main physical aspects—such as screen specifications and sizing—stay in line with last year’s smartwatch, Google is betting that advanced features like in-device AI processing and the new health emergency detection will set the Pixel Watch 5 apart. Many software advancements will be released on previous watches, but the Pixel Watch 5 is the only device that will come with every new feature available at launch. As hands-on testing begins, it remains to be seen if these innovations will truly transform the smartwatch experience for users.
