Aiming to capture consumers whose televisions are nearing the end of a typical five to seven-year lifespan, Best Buy has entered into an exclusive agreement with major manufacturers to showcase the latest generation of RGB LED televisions. This initiative follows a surge in TV purchases during the pandemic, and the retailer is now working to encourage U.S. shoppers to consider an upgrade.
Market Timing Aligns with Declining Sales
The Consumer Technology Association recorded 47.3 million televisions shipped to U.S. retailers in 2020, a peak Best Buy believes will translate into a new cycle of replacements as those sets age. The company sees a significant replacement market, expecting that many TVs bought early in the pandemic are approaching the period when consumers typically upgrade.
To seize this moment, Best Buy has become the exclusive national destination for RGB LED TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, and Hisense, as detailed in a June company announcement. While these models are available on manufacturers’ websites and some local outlets, Best Buy remains the only national chain to carry them in-store.
RGB LED Tech Delivers Notable Display Advancements
With the introduction of these TVs, Best Buy highlights their innovative system of thousands of dimming zones paired with individual red, green, and blue LEDs. This combination allows the screens to display almost 76% of the colors visible to the human eye, promising lifelike visuals. The company also emphasizes the TVs’ improved brightness, sharper AI-enhanced upscaling, and wider viewing angles—the brightest displays available on the current market, according to Best Buy.
Blake Hampton, serving as senior vice president and chief merchandising officer at Best Buy, declared that this launch represents the most meaningful advancement since the arrival of OLED almost 13 years ago. In a May discussion, Jason Bonfig, who leads as chief customer, product and fulfillment officer and will soon become CEO, told investors he expects RGB LED TVs to “accelerate” Best Buy’s television business, especially in light of recent declines.
Capitalizing on Supplier Partnerships and In-Store Experience
According to Best Buy, its exclusive offering stems from close ties with key manufacturers and focused efforts to enhance in-store presentation of the new technology. Hampton pointed out the importance of in-person interaction for customers, prompting the company to feature at least one RGB LED TV at nearly all locations, typically in a prominent spot. To support the rollout, Best Buy has provided delivery, installation, removal services, and invested in training for over 15,000 employees and vendor representatives.
The pricing structure spans a wide range, with Best Buy listing RGB LED TVs from $1,200 for a 55-inch set to $30,000 for a flagship 115-inch model. Unlike retail giants Walmart and Target, which prioritize budget-friendly electronics, Best Buy’s focus on premium TV lines and comprehensive in-store experience led manufacturers to select the company as a launch partner for this advanced technology, according to Neil Saunders of GlobalData Retail.
Analysts Assess Consumer Willingness for Upgrades
Yet, hesitation in the market persists, as reflected by observations from Kantar retail analyst Dave Marcotte, who notes reduced urgency among consumers for electronics upgrades. The last several years have seen robust TV longevity and smaller generational improvements, adding to industry headwinds. Best Buy’s consumer electronics revenue dropped from $2.22 billion in Q1 2025 to $2.15 billion in Q1 2026, even with separate tracking of other product categories such as computers and appliances.
Still, Best Buy’s data reveals that 72% of surveyed customers showed interest in purchasing an RGB LED TV after being introduced to the new features. Nevertheless, skepticism endures; Neil Saunders warns that while the enhancements may spur some sales, most shoppers could view the advances as minor—falling short of revolutionary shifts like the brief 3D TV craze.
Paul Gagnon, vice president and consumer technology analyst at Circana, believes the upgrades have effectively narrowed the performance gap with pricier OLED models, especially benefitting viewers who require exceptional brightness in sunlit or ambient-lit environments.
Will Next-Generation Displays Spur Market Growth?
Best Buy has concentrated its efforts on showcasing RGB LED TVs in-store, betting on exclusive partnerships, high-touch service, and immersive demonstrations to reinvigorate consumer interest. As many pandemic-era purchases approach the end of their natural life cycle, the upcoming months will test whether these major advances can serve as the catalyst for renewed growth and help redefine expectations for home entertainment televisions.
