Foot Locker launches new brand platform to support sneaker culture

Following years as a destination for sneaker lovers, Foot Locker is introducing an integrated campaign to showcase its heritage and expanded vision after experiencing a financial resurgence.

On Friday, the retail powerhouse Foot Locker launched a major brand campaign that underscores its long-standing influence in sneaker culture worldwide. Named “It Always Will Be Foot Locker,” this initiative rolls out across multiple platforms, including broadcast, digital, social media, out-of-home, and in-store formats. The introduction of this campaign coincides with a moment of renewed momentum for the brand, as recent improvements in business performance create opportunities for updated storytelling and engagement.

Film-Led Storytelling: Chronicling the Sneaker Movement

At the heart of the project is a two-minute film tracing sneakers’ significance in pop culture beginning with Foot Locker’s inception in 1974. Vintage clips, historic ads, and pivotal cultural moments are brought together with narration from rapper and actor Method Man, who proclaims, “No matter the color, trend, era, moment in culture, emotion or sport, it always was and always will be Foot Locker.”

Brett O’Brien, who serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, commented that the campaign’s goal is to remind audiences of “the importance that Foot Locker has always played in sneaker culture, at this epicenter of fashion, music and sports, and the fact that that’s where we always will be.” He further stated, “We did not create sneaker culture, but we’ve given it a home, and we always will give it a home.”

The Santa Monica creative agency Someplace shaped the vision for the campaign. Founded in 2022 by alumni from Wieden+Kennedy, this agency’s Nike background made them well-suited to depict the depth and richness of sneaker history for Foot Locker.

Embodying a microdocumentary format, the film highlights legendary sneakers such as the Adidas Stan Smiths and original Nike Air Jordans, alongside crucial contributions from brands like New Balance and Reebok. The narrative includes significant references to musical icons like Run-D.M.C. and Nelly, memorable moments from TV and movies such as “Family Matters” and “The Wizard of Oz,” and features basketball legends including Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, and LeBron James. Connecting past and present, Foot Locker’s iconic Striper staff are seen throughout, using archival and up-to-date footage.

Community Engagement: Sole Stories Documentary Series

In addition to the centerpiece film, the campaign is being extended with a documentary series known as Sole Stories. Produced in partnership with Hartbeat, Kevin Hart’s media company, this 36-episode series will air throughout the fall. Available through social media, digital outlets, influencer distribution, and in-store screens, the series invites community members to discuss the personal impact of sneaker culture—from remembering their first pair and beloved favorites to sharing regrets over missed opportunities. As O’Brien described it, this is “a really interesting way for us to start that dialog and the conversation about real people talking about what sneaker culture has meant to them.”

Brand Mission and Business Turnaround

The unveiling of “It Always Will Be Foot Locker” marks a strategic moment for Foot Locker. The retailer, which was acquired by Dick’s Sporting Goods in 2025, posted positive comparable sales and profitability for Q1 2026. This represented the brand’s first quarterly growth since the end of 2024, as highlighted in their published financial disclosures (details).

With solid brand awareness already in place, O’Brien indicated the current priority is to rekindle Foot Locker’s emotional resonance with consumers. “Everybody knows who Foot Locker is. It’s really about: What does Foot Locker mean?” he remarked. “It’s not forgetting our past at all — it’s embracing our past. It’s using that past as a guide for where we’re headed and how we’re going to continue to evolve.”

This revitalized brand platform aims both to honor the trajectory of sneaker culture and to encourage participation from new fans—reinforcing Foot Locker’s role as a unifying force for sneaker enthusiasts going forward.
