Dynasty Warriors producer prefers new games over remasters

As he looks ahead, Tomohiko Sho, well-known for producing the Dynasty Warriors franchise, has expressed his strong preference for pursuing new games and sequels instead of dedicating his remaining working years solely to remastering past titles.

After Recent Launch, Sho Weighs Possibility of More Remasters

These views follow the arrival of Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered across Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. During a discussion with 4Gamer, Sho was questioned about the likelihood of additional remasters in the long-running series. He did not completely rule out future remastered versions, but was clear that their development largely depends on how well the newest remaster performs in the market.

“At this point, there’s nothing definite I can say, and I haven’t really considered it, but there’s a chance we could choose to remaster titles that haven’t appeared on Steam,” Sho explained, based on a machine-assisted translation. Still, he was candid about his own lack of motivation to personally lead another remaster project.

With Retirement on Horizon, Developer Prefers Innovation

Reflecting on his career and personal circumstances, Sho admitted, “Honestly, I’d rather not do it. The process is much like a complete remake and, even during the latest project, I sometimes questioned why I was rebuilding a game I’d already made. Approaching my fifties, thoughts arise about ‘how many more games will I be able to produce before retiring,’ so I want to devote myself to inventing new titles or creating sequels.” These remarks underscore Sho’s wish to use his final years in the workplace to develop fresh and inventive content instead of retreading his previous accomplishments.

Nonetheless, he recognized the importance of addressing the desires of the series’ enthusiastic base. He pointed out that although he may not personally oversee new remaster projects, these tasks might be entrusted to colleagues, ensuring that the demand for updated classics could still be satisfied while he focuses on new developments.

Remaster Marks 25 Years of Dynasty Warriors

The release of Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered brings the original PlayStation 2 experience to a modern audience thanks to Unreal Engine 5. This edition was crafted in celebration of the series’ 25th anniversary and rolled out on several current platforms, such as the Switch 2. Initial Steam reviews have rated it ‘Very Positive’, indicating a strong start in terms of fan feedback.

This title stands among the earliest entries in a globally recognized series. While veteran fans have frequently called for remastered versions of their favorite Dynasty Warriors releases, Sho’s statements illuminate the challenge for creators: the push and pull between honoring classic games and striving to create something new.

With the newest remaster’s success under close observation, Koei Tecmo and its team face strategic decisions on whether to revisit additional legendary chapters or focus their creative talents on launching original adventures for both existing and new audiences.
