India launches digital tourism stack to unify fragmented market

India introduced the National Digital Tourism Stack, a new initiative designed to unify the country’s diverse tourism sector on a single digital infrastructure and tackle the persistent issue of fragmentation.

New Unified Tourism Platform to Enhance Travel Planning

Plans for the National Digital Tourism Stack were announced by the Ministry of Tourism and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). This platform will connect transport services, attractions, local guides, accommodations, and unique experiences, offering travelers a centralized place to explore and book a substantially wider array of tourism opportunities than what current platforms provide.

Major attractions, big hotel chains, and top airlines in India already offer seamless online booking, but smaller tourism businesses—often family-operated—remain dependent on stand-alone websites, in-person transactions, or various intermediaries. This fragmented system creates hurdles for both travelers, who want more diverse options, and regional businesses eager to expand their customer reach.

Rollout to Begin With Pilot in January 2027

The government’s deployment plan includes an initial pilot in January 2027, followed by a phased launch for the wider public starting from July 2027. Both the Ministry of Tourism and ONDC envision that this streamlined digital ecosystem will enable small, often overlooked tourism operators—such as independent local guides and family-run stays—to be located and booked with as much ease as large-scale tourism providers.

This endeavor reflects a response to longstanding inefficiencies in the system and aims to broaden opportunities for access. The new network could become a pivotal integration tool, potentially adopting advanced options like artificial intelligence to curate and suggest customized travel experiences for users.

Broader Access and Enhanced Visibility for Diverse Offerings

The creation of the National Digital Tourism Stack will help tourists do more than reserve rooms at large hotels—it will allow discovery of distinctive experiences, easy booking of official guides, and streamlined access to transportation, all within a single digital portal. This comprehensive approach stands to shine a light on local tourism providers and unique offerings that might otherwise be difficult to find, benefiting both Indian and foreign visitors.

Authorities point out that the measured introduction of the platform will allow for necessary testing and integration, ensuring operational stability and effective participation for the many small businesses positioned to gain the most.

The National Digital Tourism Stack initiative marks a decisive government-led modernization of how visitors experience and book travel in India—setting the stage for substantial evolution in both tourism business opportunities and traveler engagement in the coming years.
