Just months after launching one of the locations now set to close, Ikea is preparing to shutter three of its compact plan and order stores within the Washington, D.C. region as part of a shift in its retail direction.
Closures Scheduled for Plan and Order Sites in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia
Ikea has announced that its plan and order with pickup store in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. will close on October 18, followed by Annapolis, Maryland on October 30, and Fairfax, Virginia on November 30. The decision to shut these locations is part of a review of how its physical stores fit into Ikea’s broader strategy.
The Georgetown storefront, which took over from an Arlington outlet and began operations on November 5, 2022, has been open for less than a year. Each of the three plan and order stores represented Ikea’s recent foray into smaller formats tailored for home project planning and easy order pickup, all having opened in the past several years. Broader Strategy Prompts Ikea to Reconsider Small Stores
Ikea explained that this decision aligns with a larger strategic rethink. In its statement, the company said these closures are designed to advance its vision for “a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable future.” While the concept of plan and order points was aimed at customers planning major home renovations and provided smaller, more accessible store options near larger branches, Ikea is scaling back its enthusiasm for this retail model.
The move contrasts sharply with their previous direction. Back in 2023, Ikea revealed a $2.2 billion investment over three years meant to reinvigorate its U.S. logistics network and open new outlets—plans that included nine plan and order points and a range of other store formats (details here). In early 2024, Ikea additionally announced intentions to open ten more U.S. stores during the year, among them a debut in Oklahoma and a new flagship in downtown Los Angeles (read more).
Transition Support for Staff and Customers
Staff at these shutting plan and order points will have the chance to transfer to other regional locations like Baltimore, College Park (Maryland), and Woodbridge (Virginia). Ikea emphasized its continued commitment to assisting its employees as they navigate this shift.
Ongoing customer projects at the affected stores won’t be interrupted; services for project planning will remain available online and at other regional locations. The retailer also confirmed ongoing investment in order pickup, delivery, and digital services so customers can access Ikea’s products and resources through various channels.
Continued U.S. Expansion Despite Targeted Closures
Despite this rollback in the plan and order point strategy, Ikea reiterated its commitment to expanding elsewhere in the U.S. Each plan and order outpost marked for closure is located near a traditional Ikea store. By experimenting with a blend of online and in-person offerings, the company continues seeking the optimal model for the American market.
This targeted retreat from select store formats underlines the ongoing challenges global brands like Ikea face as they calibrate their retail presence to match shifting customer expectations and ambitious strategic objectives.
