GTA 6 introduces advanced weather with hurricanes and rainbows

According to details officially shared by the company, GTA 6 will feature a revamped weather system, advancing beyond previous Rockstar Games releases by introducing dynamic cloudscapes, localized hurricanes, and rainbows. These new effects are scheduled to debut with the game’s highly anticipated release later this year.

Players in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 can look forward to a more authentic and diversified weather experience than any before, as Rockstar Games confirmed. It will be possible to witness dramatic meteorological events, like storms, occurring in one region of the map, while nearby areas remain untouched, with the aftereffects of weather—such as puddles and rainbows—persisting long after a storm subsides. These improvements are part of Rockstar’s commitment to making the in-game world more “dynamically solid” and significantly more immersive in scale and detail.

Weather System Redesigned to Heighten Realism

During a Game Informer interview, Owen Shepherd, Rockstar Games’ vice president of art for lighting and rendering, elaborated on these technical enhancements. Shepherd outlined that “our weather system has been re-engineered for more localized and persistent effects.” Now, players will see entirely dynamic cloudscapes that drift overhead, generating diverse weather patterns—ranging from the “clear blue skies of a Miami winter” to the towering cumulonimbus clouds streaked with lightning that define the summertime and autumn atmosphere of the region.

Shepherd noted that with the new system, it’s possible for players to spot storms raging in the distance, leaving the player’s current area unaffected. The enduring impact of these storms is clear: “rainbows and wet pavements and puddles” linger as physical hints of the weather event, enhancing environmental realism.

Authentically Intense Storms and Visual Effects

Rockstar’s technological ambition isn’t limited to visual spectacle—the goal is to make players feel the force and tension of the weather. Describing the ambition, Shepherd said, “Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically.”

Despite these technical advancements, the studio has not yet clarified whether such natural phenomena—like hurricanes or thunderstorms—will influence gameplay features such as handling vehicles or navigating the skies via aircraft and parachute. Concrete details about the effects of adverse weather on gameplay remain unconfirmed and are expected to become clear upon release.

New Animal Life and World Features

In addition to climate improvements, GTA 6 will offer greatly improved wildlife diversity. According to Rockstar Games, players can encounter “over 170 animal species,” which include upwards of 60 bird types as well as more than 30 land mammals. Underwater areas also return for exploration, allowing scuba divers to find wildlife such as manatees, whales, and jellyfish.

The ability to discover and observe animals—first introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2—has been expanded in Rockstar Games’s latest entry, allowing for animal study and the possibility of finding Legendary animals, though Rockstar still keeps the details about these rare creatures under wraps.

Set for a 19 November release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Grand Theft Auto 6 aims to push the series forward with comprehensive advances in weather simulations, wildlife systems, and the creation of a deeper, richer world than ever before.
