According to director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker is built around the concept that the main character, a human, is far less powerful during daylight hours than in vampire form at night. This deliberate decision shapes both the storytelling and the diversity of gameplay in the vampire-centric title.
Comparing Progression and Combat Styles
The game’s director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, responded to feedback about the sharp contrast in the strengths of the protagonist’s two forms by reaffirming that this design is purposeful. He intended the Dawnwalker to mimic the dynamics of werewolf lore—significantly weaker as a human by day, then transformed and empowered after dark. By limiting the protagonist’s human abilities, Tomaszkiewicz explained, the narrative avoids escalating villains needlessly and can explore more relatable storylines, much like what is seen in many superhero arcs.
The distinction between human and vampire mechanics is most noticeable in combat. “Your damage with the claws develops with your level, which means that you don’t need to spend points anywhere [as a vampire],” Tomaszkiewicz said. In contrast, humans must find, purchase, or upgrade swords to improve offensively. Healing methods are another area of divergence—vampires recover health by draining enemies or using scattered blood vials, while humans are limited to crafting potions and can only heal during combat if they’ve come prepared with supplies.
Additionally, the vampire form boasts more combat abilities than the human side, with certain skills even restoring health as attacks land, making nighttime encounters especially formidable.
The varying strengths are tied not only to raw power but also to unique combat approaches and survival methods. For instance, storming a vampire fortress during the day as a human is a near-impossible feat, yet is manageable when darkness falls and the protagonist assumes their vampire abilities.
Human Daylight Advantages and Witchcraft
Despite this, the director was quick to point out that human players are not without their perks. When the sun is up, Coen—the protagonist—unlocks special witchcraft spells that are unavailable at night. These abilities keep human gameplay “interesting,” countering any potential frustration. Tomaszkiewicz revealed, “We were afraid that if, in the human form, you did not have some strong skills that allowed you to finish the game, it would be problematic from many points.”
Thus, The Blood of Dawnwalker was crafted so the bulk of activities are accessible at all times of day, even though a minority of missions are tied specifically to either sunlight or moonlight. Completing the game entirely as a human, while significantly harder, is indeed an option. “In human form, you have a few ways you can finish the game…maybe with allies, and more,” teased Tomaszkiewicz, without giving away much more information.
The game also puts a strong emphasis on letting players define their journey. Whether someone chooses to embrace the vampire’s overwhelming strength or takes the riskier human-only path, the central philosophy is “freedom of choice.” Players who remain in human form throughout are rewarded with unique conclusions, ensuring those uninterested in vampire abilities remain fully included.
Commercial Triumph, Upcoming Patch, and Mechanics
The Blood of Dawnwalker was released in early September, rapidly surpassing 1 million copies sold within just three days. The RPG enjoyed critical praise, though some reviews cited performance and technical hiccups. Developer Rebel Wolves intends to launch its first substantial update in early October, directly addressing these technical problems with an upcoming patch.
As for the time-of-day mechanic, which limits access to certain quests and features based on whether it’s day or night, Tomaszkiewicz stated that players shouldn’t anticipate significant changes to these restrictions soon. While this feature was even stricter earlier in the game’s development, it now serves as a core element—and will stay for now. Still, he allowed that this system might not appear in future sequels: potential follow-up games may drop the time-of-day mechanic entirely.
Ultimately, the major disparity in strength at night and the high difficulty curve for humans during the day are carefully considered features, built in to offer players increased options, greater challenge, and wide storytelling possibilities in what’s become one of this year’s most notable RPGs.
