Recent trademark filings reveal that Ubisoft is advancing with a significant internal artificial intelligence project named “Motherbrain.” This initiative, whose title echoes the notorious AI antagonist from the “Metroid” series, signals the company’s increasing commitment to utilizing generative AI for the creation, analysis, and interaction with video game content.
Ubisoft’s Toolset: AI Integration Deepens
“Motherbrain” has cropped up within several trademark submissions by Ubisoft, as reported by The Game File and noted by Kotaku. Among these filings, one describes an AI-driven “downloadable computer software” made for producing games and interactive experiences. Another application points to a service that leverages artificial intelligence for data analysis, user interaction, and advancing research and design for new AI software. Details thus far sketch the internal scope of “Motherbrain,” but Ubisoft has not yet made public statements about the project.
Ubisoft’s earlier steps into generative AI include “Ghostwriter,” introduced in 2023, which supports scriptwriters by generating NPC background chatter, expediting a typically laborious task. The implementation of “Ghostwriter” marked Ubisoft’s initial phase of embedding AI into the development of major series such as “Assassin’s Creed” and “Far Cry.”
Widespread Adoption and New AI-Driven Experiences
Leadership at Ubisoft has enthusiastically championed generative AI across the enterprise. CEO Yves Guillemot last year labeled AI a “revolution” on par with gaming’s legacy shift from 2D to 3D, stating that generative AI technology had already been rolled out worldwide within Ubisoft, and underscored its transformative effects for the company.
This commitment has further intensified, as highlighted by Ubisoft’s announcement this summer regarding increased investment in an initiative called “Teammates,” described as the company’s “first playable generative AI experience” within a shooter title. This reflects Ubisoft’s ambitions to pioneer novel gameplay mechanics and player interactions through emerging AI advancements.
Strategic Reorganization Amidst AI Expansion
The surge in AI development coincides with a period of substantial restructuring for Ubisoft. In January, the publisher shut down two studios, cancelled six games, and enacted layoffs as part of a large-scale organizational change. Subsequently, two additional studios have closed and a third was reorganized, resulting in approximately 380 job losses. More information about these structural changes is available in the company’s statements (see here, and here).
Even with such challenges, the company is pressing forward with a strategy that emphasizes technological advancement. Through “Motherbrain” and similar AI initiatives, Ubisoft is signaling its intent to weave artificial intelligence into both creative and operational aspects of game production.
The gaming industry continues to await specifics on Motherbrain and its full range of features, which Ubisoft is expected to disclose when the project is ready for public unveiling.
