Expedia announces 58 job cuts in latest round of layoffs

In a recent official filing in Washington state, Expedia Group announced plans to cut 58 jobs across its organization as part of a broader restructuring initiative. This move will affect employees in several regions, with job reductions set between November 21 and December 1 in offices located in Seattle, Illinois, and Florida.

Impacts on Senior Roles and Data Science Talent

Earlier this week, a Washington Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice outlined that a range of job functions are being targeted by the layoffs. The notice detailed that executive roles—such as a senior vice president position identified as vulnerable since August—are included among those slated for elimination. Of the 31 technical positions affected, 18 are linked directly to data science and machine learning. Some of these roles fall within finance departments as part of Expedia’s efforts to update and streamline its internal processes.

Global Finance Team at the Center of Job Cuts

Expedia explained that the majority of staffing changes are concentrated within its Global Finance team and are part of a drive to simplify business operations. According to the company’s statement, “Some employees are moving to new roles or locations, and some roles are being eliminated. We know change can be difficult, and we’re committed to supporting every employee through it.” The company noted that reorganization aims to improve efficiency by simplifying structures and processes.

This wave of layoffs forms part of Expedia’s ongoing assessment of its operating model and reflects a broader drive to streamline beyond just engineering or customer-focused teams. The inclusion of senior leadership and technical roles—including those in finance—shows the wide scope of the initiative.

Reductions Reach Illinois and Florida

Although the WARN notice primarily addresses Seattle-based positions, Expedia’s overhaul also involves staff in other states such as Illinois and Florida. While the company has not provided detailed information about the impacted departments and job titles outside Washington, the changes affect personnel nationally, reinforcing the broad scale of the restructuring.

These reductions coincide with a period where travel and technology companies are reevaluating their workforce sizes to respond to evolving market and economic forces. Expedia has committed to assisting affected staff through the transition, though details about severance packages or internal redeployment opportunities remain undisclosed.

The restructuring comes after reports forecasting changes in senior management, and with 18 data science and machine learning jobs included in the cuts, underscores how even highly skilled technical positions can be impacted by company-wide financial realignment.

This move represents the latest step in Expedia’s ongoing adaptation to changes within the online travel industry, as the company continues to position itself competitively amid rapid market evolution.
