Agile Strategies for Adapting to Market Uncertainty

Corneel Koster, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, has unveiled a new direction for the airline focused on premium seating, responding to shifting global travel habits and continued robust demand for upscale travel experiences.

Premium Cabin Expansion at Virgin Atlantic Driven by Growing Interest

Virgin Atlantic, guided by Corneel Koster, will be significantly boosting the number of premium seats offered on its fleet. Describing the demand for these enhancements as “insatiable,” Koster shared that the airline’s refitted 787 Dreamliners will now accommodate fewer economy seats—declining from 192 to 127—with the intention of dedicating more space to premium products. Rather than viewing this as a risk, Koster labeled the move an “investment” and acknowledged that the airline’s previous configuration did not sufficiently meet premium cabin demand.

Koster’s insights came during a conversation moderated by Gordon Smith of Skift. He pointed out that this shift mirrors global airline trends, with numerous carriers reallocating seats and resources to target high-margin premium segments. Citing concrete data, Koster reported that year-over-year UK-to-US travel demand has climbed by 7%, business travel transactions have grown by 11%, and the airline’s cargo segment has surged by 36%.

Integrating Technology While Preserving Human Interaction

Emphasizing the importance of personal engagement, Koster discussed how, despite technological innovation and the adoption of AI in aviation, human touch remains vital for maintaining brand loyalty. He described Virgin Atlantic’s approach to customer service, such as the introduction of a concierge system that efficiently combines automation with the signature “British tone of voice” to streamline frequent passenger requests. Nevertheless, Koster made clear that “humans will not be cut out of the loop where it matters most to our customers.”

Addressing the rapid integration of digital solutions, Koster maintained that although AI-driven applications can resolve logistical tasks, they cannot substitute for the core experience of travel—uniting individuals across borders and facilitating moments of reconnection with the natural world. He emphasized that increased digital engagement may even prompt greater interest in physical travel, fueling the industry’s reorientation towards superior premium offerings.

Strategic Alliances and the SAF Supply Challenge

Highlighting the value of partnerships, Koster praised Virgin Atlantic’s alliance with Delta Air Lines. He explained that this collaboration allows access to Delta’s expansive network and operational advantages, while ensuring Virgin Atlantic retains its unique brand essence, design, and organizational culture. Koster believes well-structured partnerships can actually “amplify” a smaller airline’s identity rather than mask it—an important lesson for other carriers weighing similar agreements.

On sustainability, Koster addressed the increasing demands associated with government-mandated sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) targets in the UK. He cautioned that the present demand for SAF outstrips available supply. As a result, he suggested, airlines could be forced to impose higher costs with no corresponding environmental benefit on customers, given insufficient fuel resources—an issue likely to intensify as regulatory deadlines approach and mandates expand.

Future Outlook in an Evolving Airline Industry

The latest strategy from Virgin Atlantic is emblematic of a wider move in aviation to prioritize premium services for growth, while also contending with ongoing technology integration, competition, and sustainability demands. With traveler expectations changing and new challenges emerging, Koster maintains that investing in premium experiences and fostering genuine connections with travelers will distinguish successful airlines in today’s complex global climate.
