Hideo Kojima addresses Physint budget and deadline concerns

Xbox Steps In to Publish Kojima’s “Physint” After Sony Pulls Out Due to Financial Worries

After Sony made the decision to withdraw as publisher for Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated “action espionage” title, Physint, citing issues over budget, potential profitability and exclusivity, the project has now secured support from Xbox. Kojima recently addressed the uncertainty that followed Sony’s exit, while both Xbox and Kojima Productions have reassured fans of their shared commitment to moving forward with the game.

Industry Troubles Lead Sony to Back Away

Last week’s confirmation that Sony “stepped away” from Physint opened the path for Xbox to assume publishing responsibilities. Reports noted that Sony’s withdrawal was prompted by worries about the project’s ability to turn a profit and maintain exclusivity. In subsequent conversations with IGN, Kojima discussed the personal and professional impact the news had on himself and his staff.

Recounting the pivotal meeting, Kojima said his memory was hazy: “I don’t remember so much of that meeting, to be honest with you. And my colleagues probably don’t remember as well, so I can’t really answer if you ask me what exactly they said. But, from my side, I love Sony. And I don’t have any bad feelings against them because I know that it’s a tough time in the game industry.”

Kojima emphasized the shock caused by Sony’s move, particularly given the long relationship between his company and PlayStation that spans three decades: “Nothing could’ve prepared me for their decision to step away from the project. So I thought, ‘What am I going to do from tomorrow?’”

He also addressed the instability currently affecting the industry, mentioning layoffs and closures, and admitted he had assumed Physint was secure in spite of industry uncertainty.

Xbox Partnership Announced, Kojima Productions Addresses Rumors

In response to stories about alleged business tensions, Kojima Productions issued a statement about “aspersions around our relationship with PlayStation, the commercial performance of the Death Stranding franchise, and the broader production planning and investment” required for the new project. The company noted: “None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source and as such we encourage you to take them with a dose of scepticism. Make no mistake, this was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications.” They further clarified, “the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong.”

After Sony’s withdrawal, Kojima turned his attention to Xbox as a new collaborator. Kojima explained, “I approached Xbox and they were great. They could support us technically,” taking advantage of the rapport developed over the “OD” project, which made discussions more straightforward. Xbox, Kojima said, responded very positively: “Their first reaction was like, ‘This pitch was fantastic. Never seen a pitch like this!’ And that’s how it started with Xbox.”

The enthusiasm at Xbox appears mutual. A company representative remarked, “Betting on Kojima-san is an easy call. We believe in his team’s ability to build triple-A games with groundbreaking, new IP and we believe in OD, Physint, and our growing partnership.”

What Lies Ahead for Physint?

Physint, initially introduced along with Sony’s Columbia Pictures studios, is now advancing under Kojima Productions, with Xbox and Microsoft’s gaming arm stepping up as partners. Kojima admitted that the loss of Sony support left him concerned for the future of his company—“My studio might collapse, right?”—but the deal with Xbox has ensured both the project’s progression and the studio’s stability.

The transition of Physint from Sony to Xbox highlights not only the volatility of today’s gaming landscape but also the readiness of major publishers to invest in visionary developers and bold new ideas. Kojima Productions reiterated their continued profitability and maintained relationships with PlayStation, confirming a strong outlook as they take on new collaborative ventures with Xbox.
