On October 11, Target will debut eight new stores spanning six different states, representing the final stage of its 2024 expansion plan and emphasizing the company’s ongoing ambition to increase its presence across the U.S.
Year-End Store Additions Achieve 2024 Growth Plans
According to Target’s press release, the Minneapolis-based retailer will be launching eight new stores next month throughout New York, Ohio, Mississippi, Texas, Virginia, and Tennessee, including a location in the Hamptons. These new openings allow Target to meet its stated objective of 30 new stores for the year. Most of these new stores—seven out of eight—surpass 125,000 square feet, offering larger spaces than the company’s average location and supporting a broader array of products as well as improved shopping experiences. These developments align with Target’s long-term vision of opening over 300 new stores by 2035.
Expansion Supported by Robust Investments and Store Upgrades
Beyond increasing store count and size, Target is devoting resources to modernizing its current stores and improving its digital infrastructure. Last fall, the company revealed a plan to allocate an additional $1 billion this year, supplementing a previously assigned $5 billion for new stores, store remodels, technology improvements, and other major capital expenses.
Adrienne Costanzo, Target’s chief stores officer, asserted that the new store openings enhance both the team’s capabilities and the guest experience. “These new stores give our teams the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experiences, and use technology to move smarter and faster every day,” Costanzo said during the official announcement.
Target is also refreshing 130 existing stores and intends to roll out next-day delivery to 20 additional metro areas in 2026. These efforts are part of broader initiatives to optimize operations and deliver an improved experience to customers whether they shop in person or online.
Continued Expansion and Impressive Results Throughout 2024
2024 has proven to be a milestone year for Target. Earlier, the company opened its 2,000th store in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, a location noted for its open, spacious design and a food and beverage section that is 30% larger than the retailer’s standard footprint. In May, Target added six more stores in Arizona, Missouri, New Jersey, and North Carolina as part of its ongoing rollout (more details here).
These physical growth efforts have coincided with robust financial results. During the second quarter, Target posted net sales of $26.5 billion, reflecting a 5.3% year-over-year gain. Comparable sales increased by 3.8%, and net earnings climbed to nearly $1.9 billion, more than double the previous year’s figure (see more).
Future-Focused Growth Strategy Through 2035
Looking ahead, Target remains focused on opening more than 300 new stores by 2035, with an ongoing commitment to enhance both its physical locations and online services. By expanding, remodeling, and upgrading operations, Target is positioning itself to adapt to evolving consumer needs and remain competitive throughout the U.S. market.
