Advertisers can now extend their campaigns into ChatGPT conversations through a pilot program introduced by Amazon, blending advanced retail media strategies with generative AI. This initiative, developed in partnership with OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, utilizes Amazon’s demand-side platform (DSP) and highlights ongoing efforts from both organizations to advance AI-powered advertising solutions.
Amazon DSP Brings Managed ChatGPT Ads to US Advertisers
Through this new program, Amazon advertisers gain access to ChatGPT Ads inventory using a managed service model, where Amazon’s experts handle campaign setup and optimization. For now, the offering is limited to the United States. Early participants include Delta Vacations—the Delta Air Lines-affiliated vacation brand—joining a select list of brands piloting this approach.
This development marks an important step forward for Amazon Ads, granting brands the chance to connect with users through one of the most popular AI chatbot platforms. Advertisements, which include both text and image formats, are displayed immediately beneath organic ChatGPT responses within chats, distinctly marked as sponsored to ensure transparency. Additionally, Amazon offers product feed ads that automatically generate content using advertisers’ product catalogs.
Pilot Mechanics and Takeaways for Marketers
Ad inventory in this program is offered on both a cost-per-click (CPC) and cost-per-mille (CPM) basis, consistent with existing DSP pricing models. OpenAI remains responsible for all ad placement decisions via its proprietary algorithms. Pilot brands receive comprehensive, aggregated metrics—including data on impressions, clicks, CPC, CPM, and cost per result—to assess the efficiency of their campaigns.
Currently, ChatGPT delivers ads to its free and Go subscription users. OpenAI, seeking to scale its advertising business that began in early 2024, recently reported a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate achieved by late last month. The platform now features tens of thousands of active advertisers and has introduced ads into new territories such as India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
Industry Context and Delta Vacations’ Comments
With an extensive database on shopper and viewer behaviors, Amazon provides marketers with unique targeting capabilities. By partnering with ChatGPT, brands can launch campaigns that are contextual and highly relevant inside AI-driven chat interactions. Katrin Koenig, president of Delta Vacations, remarked, “Travel planning is becoming increasingly personalized, and travelers expect experiences that feel relevant. Through our collaboration with Amazon Ads and ChatGPT Ads, we can leverage deep consumer insights to inform how and when Delta Vacations appear within ChatGPT Ads experiences to create new opportunities for travelers to engage and discover vacation possibilities.”
The past several months have seen OpenAI forge alliances with other significant retail media networks, such as platforms powered by Target and Albertsons. Nevertheless, Amazon’s ad network is the third largest globally, having generated nearly $70 billion in ad revenue in the previous year, underscoring the significance of this pilot within the digital ad landscape.
OpenAI Ramps Up as Advertisers Monitor Developments
As OpenAI prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO), the company is taking steps to expand its advertising reach, including establishing partnerships with firms like LiveRamp to improve measurement and bolster advertiser trust. While some scrutiny has emerged regarding performance within this growing sector, industry experts believe Amazon DSP’s involvement could drive bigger brands to experiment with this channel.
Before finalizing this agreement, OpenAI reportedly held talks with rivals such as The Trade Desk about possible DSP integration, though Amazon ultimately earned the collaboration. The results of this pilot may have a considerable impact on future digital marketing approaches in AI-driven chat environments worldwide.
