Accor CEO Discusses the Role of Data and Instinct in Hospitality

Accor’s CEO Champions Instinct-Driven Leadership in a Data-Obsessed Era

Sébastien Bazin, Accor’s CEO since 2013, maintains that while data is an invaluable asset for the world’s leading hotel group, intuition and personal judgement are indispensable in making pivotal choices as technology reshapes hospitality. Bazin will further elaborate on this leadership perspective at the Skift Global Forum in New York, an event scheduled for September 22–24, 2026.

Decision Making: Gut Feeling Comes First

Overseeing a portfolio of more than 5,800 hotels and resorts spanning upwards of 45 brands, Bazin champions a leadership style that favors natural judgement above algorithmic assurance. His method, as he shares, begins with his instinct, followed by his heart and then his mind: “I start with my gut, then my heart, then my brain. My instinct tells me what feels right, my heart tells me how the decision will affect people and my brain tells me the timing.” Stressing the “essential” role of data in supplying key background information, Bazin warns leaders not to let cold statistics overshadow the critical value of human insight. He cautions, “Waiting for perfect information often means you have already waited too long,” highlighting how quickly the industry moves.

Balancing AI Progress With People Skills

Bazin predicts that artificial intelligence will revolutionize “nearly every part of the customer journey” over the coming years, especially in helping travelers find, book, and customize their trips. Nevertheless, he insists that authentic human engagement remains the heart of genuine hospitality. “As technology becomes more powerful, I believe the human touch becomes even more valuable. That is where our teams, our brands and the experiences we create can truly differentiate.” He is clear that technology’s role should be to empower, rather than eclipse, the meaningful, personal service that creates lasting guest memories.

Social Mobility: Hospitality’s Lesser-Known Impact

Bazin draws attention to a side of hospitality that often gets overshadowed by discussions about emerging tech and evolving markets — its potential as a driver of social mobility. He underscores the way hotels bring people together and create opportunities for individuals from different educational, social, and economic backgrounds to advance professionally. Bazin remarks, “It doesn’t show up on a P&L, but that’s exactly why we need to ask if this side of hospitality will survive the next round of pressure for higher margins.”

What’s Next for Hospitality Leadership?

Looking ahead, Bazin has remarked that his ideal successor should possess a deeper mastery of technology, provoking thought about the evolving relationship between instinct and analytics among tomorrow’s leaders. As Accor and the broader hospitality industry embrace further automation, Bazin’s approach raises a pivotal question: Will intuition remain central to leadership, or will reliance on algorithmic data become the new norm?

At the Skift Global Forum, Bazin will be part of a panel with other prominent industry figures such as Ariane Gorin from Expedia Group, Geoff Ballotti of Wyndham, and Hamad Al-Khater of Qatar Airways Group, delving into these urgent topics and the philosophical dilemmas steering hospitality’s future.
