Sam’s Club Introduces Free Tire Installation for Plus Members, Targeting Retention and Growth
For those with a Plus membership at Sam’s Club, complimentary tire installation now comes with any tire purchase, replacing the previous installation fee of $80. This expanded benefit is designed to encourage more members to upgrade to the premium tier, particularly appealing to existing automotive services users who already show impressive retention statistics.
Premium Membership Value Gets a Lift With New Perks
The latest addition of no-cost tire installation strengthens the overall perks package for the Plus membership. Other benefits include 2% cash back, free shipping for purchases over $50, earlier access to shop, plus extra discounts on pharmacy, optical, and auto services. While the published rate for Plus is $120 annually—twice that of the standard plan—both memberships are currently promoted at considerable discounts: Plus at $55, and standard at $25, valid through the end of September for the first year.
Steve Schrobilgen, Sam’s Club’s chief operating officer, shared that this new car service incentive aims to persuade members who already use auto services to upgrade to Plus by making the value proposition and convenience clearer. He highlighted that offering installation for free not only saves members money but addresses a real customer requirement, thus demonstrating the practical advantages of choosing a Plus membership for automotive needs.
Loyalty Strengthened Through Automotive Offerings
Engagement with the Sam’s Garage tire and battery center remains robust, as Sam’s Club asserts that up to 95% of members who use these auto services renew their memberships. In fact, there has been a 22% increase in usage of Sam’s Garage compared to the previous year, underscoring its growing popularity. According to a Kantar study conducted in February, 24% of Sam’s Club members use its tire service, while 31% at Costco take advantage of tire services, which Costco provides free for all members.
Both tiers of membership at Sam’s Club include up to four years of emergency roadside assistance, complimentary car battery health checks, and free installation of wiper blades. In October of last year, Sam’s Club also improved its automotive service by providing a dedicated adviser at each tire and battery center, making it easier for members to schedule appointments and receive expert guidance about available tire options.
Wholesale Retailers Compete Through Member Perks
Enhancing rewards for members fits into the broader wholesale retail strategy. In the previous year, Sam’s Club concentrated on its pharmacy offerings, rolling out benefits such as same-day prescription delivery for Plus members and providing discounted pet insurance for all membership levels.
Anna Brennan, who serves as Kantar’s principal analyst for club and specialty retailers, pointed out that by enhancing its suite of automotive benefits, Sam’s Club could attract those joining primarily for gas savings, especially as fuel costs rise. She did, however, express skepticism about whether saving the $80 tire installation fee alone would be sufficient to prompt many to upgrade, since tire replacements are infrequent.
Brennan also noted that continual addition of new benefits is crucial for clubs to prove value as subscription options multiply. She observed that incremental perks—such as the new free tire installation—make the value of membership more concrete, even for those who may not frequently track every grocery or service-related saving.
Ongoing Enhancements Position Sam’s Club for Growth
By focusing on members most likely to renew and adding new benefits to its Plus offering, Sam’s Club aims to support both stronger retention and broader appeal amid growing industry competition. Free tire installation is only the latest in a series of upgrades as Sam’s Club competes with other retailers like Costco within the club sector.
Continued investment in auto services, coupled with improvements in convenience and member value, signal Sam’s Club’s intention to make its Plus membership more enticing—appealing to both new members and loyal customers—to drive future growth and renewal rates.
