As Civilization 7 marks its 35th anniversary, Firaxis has revealed a host of ambitious updates, including a comprehensive timeline overhaul and a space-themed paid expansion that promise to drive the franchise forward. Over the next year, players can expect the introduction of contemporary gameplay and the opportunity to explore outer space, with initial improvements rolling out even before these major releases.
The Atomic Age Arrives in Civilization 7
Civilization 7’s timeline is set to advance well past the 1950s thanks to the free Arc of Tomorrow update, which leads the game into the Atomic Age. For the first time, players will have access to new historical periods—starting from Antiquity or jumping ahead to future eras. This update brings fresh content such as innovative buildings, period-appropriate units, and distinct visual styles, all intended to refresh and modernize the later stages of gameplay.
Among the additions are new civilizations and leaders, expanded nuclear tactics—including an engaging twist on the classic concept of mutually assured destruction—and a revamped diplomatic environment. With the debut of Multilateral Agreements, leaders can cooperate in response to modern threats, such as proliferating nuclear weapons, which may lead to disarmament negotiations or escalating tension. Furthermore, settlements can now be converted into City-States, allowing the use of Proxy Warfare that prioritizes regional skirmishes over direct conquest.
Firaxis shared via their official news that these features are meant to capture the volatile mix of innovation and anxiety characterizing recent history: “There’s a compelling need to honour the uncertainty and fear present in [the recent past]… as well as moments of light, triumph, and hope… things once thought impossible, like spaceflight, were challenged and overcome as technology advanced at a rapid pace, while marginalised peoples rallied together to fight for justice and equality.”
New Mechanisms and the Dawn of Space Travel
Included in the Arc of Tomorrow update is the debut of Great Works of Film: players can send out Film Crews that scout locations, with their projects gaining strategic rewards dependent on genre and quality. The new Manufactured Goods feature enables players to blend specific resources, such as combining commodities to produce Enriched Uranium. Playtests for this major update will take place later in the year, and those interested can register for details here.
Following the game’s progression into the Atomic Age, Civilization 7 will unlock its first premium expansion, Earthrise. With Earthrise, players venture into space, earning era-based rewards. In the early game, exploration involves naming stars and tracking constellations. As time advances, civilizations can initiate orbital missions and eventually build a space agency. Late stages of the expansion focus on sending missions beyond Earth, where players uncover new planetary resources with valuable effects back home.
Earthrise is also set to broaden gameplay by offering tools to alter the landscape and improve tile yields as biomes are better utilized. Civil engineering upgrades will be introduced to counteract or undo the damage caused by global warming and rising numbers of Natural Disasters.
Upcoming Releases and Update Schedule
Prior to these larger expansions, a patch identified as version 1.5.0 will become available this month, featuring the True Start Location Earth map, two newly randomized map options (Terra Incognita and Shuffle Voronoi), as well as enhancements across diplomacy, resource mechanics, and user interface design.
Both the Arc of Tomorrow free update and the Earthrise paid expansion have been scheduled for release in 2027, with Arc of Tomorrow releasing ahead of the expansion. As Earthrise arrives, it stands to become the first paid content for the title, joining more than £100 already spent by fans on additional content—a subject of active discussion within the community.
With these sweeping changes on the horizon, Firaxis intends to keep dedicated fans invested in Civilization 7 while redefining what the franchise is capable of in both its historical and forward-looking gameplay elements.
