Ken Karklin has exited his position as CEO at Pivotal, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft maker backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, at a time when the company is working to bring cutting-edge personal and emergency aircraft to market.
Change at the Helm for Advanced Air Mobility Leader
This week, Pivotal announced via a statement that Ken Karklin, the company’s CEO for the past four years, is leaving to “pursue new endeavors.” While specific details about the timing and reasoning behind the transition were not shared, Karklin reflected on the company’s evolution and expressed confidence that the groundwork established during his leadership would drive continued progress in the Advanced Air Mobility sector. Noting the shift from early prototypes to functional vehicles, he spoke of his pride in the company’s momentum.
“Leading Pivotal has been the privilege of my career,” Karklin remarked, noting that Pivotal had advanced “beyond the promise of light eVTOL and proved it out in practice.”
Following Karklin’s departure, Mike Ross has been appointed as interim CEO. Ross, who became a member of Pivotal’s board of directors in November 2025, praised Karklin’s leadership, highlighting his “disciplined approach to safety, engineering, and accessibility.” Ross pledged that the company’s core mission and strategy would remain firm as he steps into the interim role.
Progress in Aircraft Technology and First Responder Operations
With Larry Page as a key backer, Pivotal is recognized for its Helix single-seat electric eVTOL, which opened for U.S. sales in 2022. Designed for personal use, the Helix stands out as it does not require a pilot’s license and is priced starting around $200,000, advancing the goal of widespread personal flight access in the eVTOL industry.
The BlackFly model, intended for defense and emergency responder use, also marks a significant milestone for Pivotal. Last month, this aircraft was utilized for the first time in a U.S. emergency in North Carolina, where it reached the scene 20 minutes ahead of the ambulance that was dispatched at the same time. Pivotal notes this as a key demonstration of eVTOL’s potential in rapid emergency response, adding that BlackFly units have collectively conducted more than 10,000 flights to date.
FAA eVTOL Integration Pilot Program Participation
Pivotal has joined the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, an initiative designed to broaden the testing and integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft across the country. Being chosen for this pilot program is a major advantage for eVTOL manufacturers, as it enables them to collect valuable operational data and fast-track progress toward regulatory recognition.
According to the company, their priorities remain consistent as the leadership change unfolds, especially with the fourth-generation Helix soon to be introduced to the market. Ross emphasized that the team and business roadmap are “steady through this transition.”
Pivotal maintains its status as a major force in the fast-evolving eVTOL sector, committed to advancing both individual air mobility and critical public safety operations as it adapts to new industry challenges.
