GTA 6 gameplay reveal attracts 3.97 million peak viewers

Setting a new benchmark for 2026, the first gameplay reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6 drew close to 4 million concurrent viewers from around the globe, making it the most popular live-streamed gaming event of the year across all streaming platforms.

Record Numbers for GTA 6 Gameplay Event

According to Streams Charts analytics, the official GTA 6 gameplay unveiling drew a maximum of 3,970,738 simultaneous viewers at its 8pm UK time broadcast. This extraordinary audience outpaced those of the Summer Game Fest 2026, Nintendo Direct in June, and Sony’s State of Play events, making it the top-viewed gaming stream in 2026 so far. Over the course of the event, 9,038 streamers contributed to the massive coverage, collectively generating 5,227,798 hours viewed during the streaming period.

Platform Performance and Technical Glitches

The audience heavily favored Twitch, which was responsible for 44 percent of viewing hours. YouTube captured 34.8 percent, and Kick handled 20.2 percent of the event’s total viewing time. Unprecedented demand led to technical issues that affected both Netflix and Twitch at the event’s outset, with delays of 40-50 minutes for some users before they could access the stream. Nevertheless, interest remained strong, and Streams Charts registered over 100,000 GTA 6-related chat messages in just three hours.

Streamer Performance and Audience Feedback

Individual content creators celebrated milestones as well. Juan Alberto “IlloJuan” García set a personal best, reaching 233,520 peak viewers. Rubius secured 191,056 concurrent viewers, and IShowSpeed rounded out the top streamers with 177,887 viewers.

Message analysis showed most chat activity (65-72 percent) was neutral, with positive sentiment ranging from 11-15 percent, and negative comments making up 17-20 percent—most of which addressed the technical setbacks rather than game content. About 20 percent of messages compared Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 to the new title, with some viewers criticizing pricing, exemplified by posts like: “GTA V DLC FOR 80$ LMAO”.

Platform Usage and Web Traffic Spikes

Insights from Cloudflare revealed that Netflix’s global internet traffic surged by 16 percent—with the UK alone witnessing a dramatic 45 percent increase during the event. Twitch observed a 12 percent rise in average traffic, and hit a 35 percent increase within three hours following the reveal. Meanwhile, YouTube saw its concurrent user count spike by 39 percent at 1am as the gameplay trailer was released.

Rockstar’s own website saw the most dramatic change, with traffic jumping by 172 percent worldwide and spiking 1210 percent in the UK while the reveal was live.

Key Features Announced for GTA 6

The presentation highlighted many new aspects of the much-anticipated release, such as updates to the Wanted system, major changes in vehicle theft and driving, a revamped romance system, a much larger in-game world, and a host of additional activities to enjoy. The game’s launch is slated for November 19th on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Ongoing Controversy and Livestreaming’s Growing Role

While fans celebrated the innovative direction Rockstar Games is taking and the event’s record-breaking statistics, controversy remains. Some recently dismissed Rockstar North employees have brought their complaints to employment tribunals, alleging unfair dismissals related to their union activities.

The monumental response to GTA 6’s reveal demonstrates not just the franchise’s global appeal but also highlights how central livestreaming has become to major industry announcements—even as it tests the limits of existing digital infrastructure during moments of extremely high demand.
