GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS with 60 FPS mode still uncertain

GTA 6 to Launch at 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, Rockstar Co-Studio Head Confirms

Fans eager for Grand Theft Auto 6 were informed by Rockstar North that the game will debut at a steady 30 frames per second (FPS) on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Although the studio has not ruled out the possibility of introducing a 60 FPS performance mode in the future, there is no definitive commitment as of now.

Developer Commentary and In-Depth Technical Insights

The frame rate details were shared by Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s co-studio head, during a conversation with Flow Games reporter Davy Jones. Nelson stated that 30 FPS is the current target, but ongoing discussions with the development team are necessary to assess whether a 60 FPS mode can be available at launch or sometime post-release. Nelson also mentioned that final decisions related to resolution and features like Ray Tracing have not yet been locked in.

This topic came to light after the publication of a new extended gameplay trailer, which highlighted the visual leap made in GTA 6. Reviewers at Digital Foundry analyzed the footage and found it runs at 1440p on PlayStation 5 with a stable 30 FPS, experiencing only rare, minor dips. It’s important to note, however, that the video asset itself is capped at 30 FPS, which may mask additional frame rate fluctuations. Interested fans can examine the unedited trailer version here.

Performance Options Remain Unclear Across Platforms

The studio has yet to announce whether Performance and Quality modes, now commonplace in many big releases, will be added to GTA 6. Other titles, like the recent “The Blood of Dawnwalker” by Rebel Wolves, have responded to fan demand by implementing a 60 FPS performance mode prior to launch. This raises questions about whether GTA 6 will eventually allow higher frame rates, especially on more advanced hardware such as the PS5 Pro. There are also no specifics regarding how the game will run on less powerful hardware such as the Xbox Series S, or if mid-generation upgrades will see additional graphical improvements.

This approach continues Rockstar’s precedent: Grand Theft Auto V also launched at 30 FPS for its PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 editions, with GTA 6 thus continuing a similar baseline for frame rate performance on consoles.

Expanded Game Features and Company Developments

New elements about GTA 6 gameplay were also announced in the most recent showcase—these involve a reworked wanted system, changes to the mechanics of carjacking, the introduction of a richer romance feature, a much larger explorable world, and an expanded roster of player activities. This scale underscores Rockstar’s investment in pushing the boundaries of open-world gaming, serving as an example of what substantial budgets can achieve. However, with increased realism and depth, some observers note the challenge of maintaining enjoyable gameplay for broad audiences.

Rockstar North’s announcement comes amid tumult for the company. The studio recently underwent layoffs, leading to legal action from several ex-employees alleging dismissals tied to union activities. Meanwhile, excitement around the game grows, with fans analyzing every piece of new footage and speculating about features that may arrive on release.

Although some in the community have expressed concern over the confirmed 30 FPS target, Rockstar North’s willingness to consider technical enhancements in the future means performance improvements could still be in store, pending additional announcements.
