For the first time in over a decade, Paradox Interactive is breaking away from its traditional grand strategy offerings, officially unveiling Afterworld, a title set in an entirely new, original universe.
Post-Apocalyptic North America: A Fresh Setting
Unlike the historical worlds of Europa Universalis, Victoria, or Crusader Kings, Paradox’s new venture immerses players in a devastated post-apocalyptic North America. Civilization has fallen, leaving the landscape fraught with danger, remnants of ruined cities, and only isolated communities clinging to survival. Players take on the role of a small group of survivors rather than controlling a historic nation, starting from humble beginnings and striving to rebuild in a harsh, unfamiliar world.
Survival mechanics are central in Afterworld—teams must secure basic necessities like food, water, and shelter while slowly unlocking past knowledge and technological expertise as their population increases. Each playthrough features a procedurally generated map, offering distinct challenges and discoveries that shape every campaign uniquely. Players will need to manage crucial resources, restore trade routes, and gradually regain lost ground as they push back against the wilderness.
Narrative Focus and Multi-Generational Choices
Paradox emphasizes that Afterworld will integrate a strong narrative dimension. At release, a range of starting factions will be available—for example, survivors who escaped a collapsed nuclear shelter, or fervent devotees roaming the wastelands in search of their god. Every chosen origin provides a different developmental avenue, and exploration unlocks vital skills and technologies hidden among the debris of the old civilization.
Major gameplay decisions form the core of Afterworld’s experience. Paradox promises players will face numerous “strategic challenges and moral crises”, where choices leave long-lasting impacts, sometimes spanning generations. Scenarios might involve negotiating with new religious sects, managing dwindling resources, or confronting other survivor groups—some of whom possess mutations or enhancements. Players may even encounter immortal leaders lingering since before the disaster, each with their own schemes for dominance.
Multiplayer Modes and Launch Information
At release, Afterworld will support both competitive and cooperative multiplayer, enabling alliances or rivalries as participants attempt to construct a new civilization. While Paradox has not yet disclosed an exact release date for Afterworld, the Steam page is already active for users who wish to wishlist the game and receive future news. With a foreboding warning, the developers remind players of the ever-present danger in Afterworld: “a second collapse is always one bad decision away.”
